Let me just hang one out there.
A straw poll if you will.
How many posters drink at their abode's alone? If you do, how regularly do you do so? How much would you typically consume on an evening in with only your tv/book/computer for company?
i only ask because i'm finding myself doing this with increasing regualrity. Maybe this has something to do with the increasingly chilly weather, my girlfriend training away for her new job, my apathy for the bar/club scene these days, or my impending spiral into alcoholism.
To answer my own questions, i'd say that I consume alcohol (only beer, i should add) approximately 2 times a week alone in my apartment. In regards to quantity usually a regular 1600ml pitcher to start before begrudgingly (sp!!) heading out for another couple of 500ml cans, perhaps dribking both, but most usually drinking one before retiring to bed.
Your statistic/thoughts eagerly anticipated.

OP,
I would say:
Do you have an alcoholism in your family?
If so, I would definitely say you are on the road yourself. Drinking a pitcher is excessive, unless you are out. At home, it's excessive. Then to need more, that is a red flag.
I love beer as much as the next guy, but to have a thirst for it that goes beyond one or two at home, I don't see it.
Try going off it for a week. See if you can do it. Just my 2 cents. |

By LL, you are from England, right? That means all bets are off. You may be drinking far below the average, if you're only doing it a couple nights a week. Congrats! |

You could be much worse! My habbit out strips yours by miles, I was hoping to find a girl friend to curb mine rather than make it worse myself |

To the OP: it sounds like 2 or more litres a day is a bit much... maybe try a 2 beer limit?
I drink a little nearly everyday, but only get drunk with other people (if you find you're getting hammered often on your lonesome, I think you may wanna think things over). When I get drunk I like to do it in a social setting, slowly and moderately, and avoid stupid things like tequila shots. I love the relaxed inhibition booze can bring, but pretty much hate the blithering or aggressive type of raging drunks who can't hack it... For me it's all about relaxing (except on the rare occasions when debauchery is in the evening's cards - like at a wedding or something )
If I'm alone after work or whatever I'll usually have a cold one (or two) while chilling on my bed watching a movie or something, and then usually fall asleep shortly thereafter. On weekends I usually drink more, cuz I like to go out.
Anyway, I understand why people drink. Yep it is a vice, but a fairly necessary one in modern life. It's practically an institution. Binge drinking can be quite harmful, but I don't see how some people can fully do without a drink now and then (especially after work)... just don't overdo it.
...btw, this may sound strange, but I actually kind of enjoy the somnolent hangovers moderate drinking can bring, makes me feel kind of pensive and can provide a humble perspective (in a good way). |

My guess is there are many who go beyond 2L a day on average, at home, alone. Many others go beyond that, outside, with others. |

When I was working in Eastern Europe I fell into a pattern of drinking every night. Partly because it was so cheap! I was earning about $1000 a month and a 500ml beer only cost 20 cents. No harm in hammering back one or two dollars worth of beer, right!? Well, when I moved back to Canada and the same habit cost $15-$20... well, I eased off and eventually gave it up. |

Korean beer isn't that strong anyway so doesn't really matter if you drink a pitcher and a few each night. I would barely be feeling anything after that so why not. If you like the taste, it isn't that much different than having water or coke. It is just a preference. It does help to take the edge off a small bit. Nothing wrong with taking the edge off a bit. |

Do you think alcohol is more or a problem for English teachers in Korea than in their home countries? The first time people actually have disposable income?
Seriously, the way some people talk about alcohol on here, it sounds like Dave's is full of alcoholics. Drinking every night, having over 2 L of beer, alone. Needing some to fall asleep every night. I find it a bit disturbing but maybe that's just me. Social drinking with friends is an entirely different matter but alone...I don't really know what to think about that. |

When you are alone in a country without family or friends to keep you grounded, alcoholism is easy to fall into. After the initial fun stage of culture shock, a lot of teachers feel isolated and develop a routine or home, work, drink... |

Find other hobbies than drinking, thats all it is if your doing it every day. i hit the gym from round 730 to 10ish so by the time i get home i'm pretty much done and cracking a beer isn't that appealing. |

I hardly drank at all before coming to Korea. In the US, I only ever drank microbrewery beer about 1 or 2 bottles at a time. Very occasionally, like less than three times a year, I'd drink with friends and have 5 or 7.
Now in Korea, I drink a lot. Not a lot in one sitting, but I usually have a mixed drink 4 nights a week. Like a whiskey and coke or screwdriver.
I blame it on the lack of dank in K land. |

Yeah, maybe 4-6 litres of beer each night at home, or maybe 2-3 bottles of wine. Nothing wrong with that except that it tends to eat through one's "savings". |

The real question is... who drinks before work????
I used to do this when I was doing conversation groups. One or two ciders would make me more talkative and interested in that the students were saying. But it wasn't enough to make me slur or look/smell drunk. |
