Hi, I am south african (i.e. I come from a place with VERY little snow!), so i'm looking forward to trying out some skiing this winter in Korea, but the prices seem to be really steep. Does anyone know of the cheapest place to go? Would a season pass be a better option and how much do they cost? I only plan on going skiing a couple of times. I would need to hire all the gear too. Also, which is the best month for skiing in Korea? Thanx!

Korean ski hills are not particularly expensive. It's not a cheap sport.

I recommend Bears Town, which is less than an hour from Seoul, a pretty decent slope, and one of the cheaper ones.

From what I hear, a lift ticket will cost you 40,000 won. Rental equipment will cost you about 25,000. Starting in December, I will be taking some trips to the mountains from Seoul and will be staying overnight the cheapest hotel available. PM me if you are interested in traveling and lodging together (this applies to anyone who wants to ski or snowboard).

I'm definitely interested in getting some skiing in. Is it dangerous? Do places have on-sie lodging? What does a night run?

I myself have never stayed overnight at a ski hill here. Once I missed my shuttle bus back to Seoul, and had to catch a city bus there. Not hard. If you go out to Gangwondo you should book a place in advance.

Ski hills here are not dangerous if you aren't a beginner. The beginner hills tend to be dangerous because there are a lot of people on skis who aren't ready yet. I've seen a few horrid collisions and they have a habit of taking accident victims off the hill in a body bag. Intermediate hills are much safer.

What is the closest place to Busan?

Busan...closest place is probably Muju. Supposed to be second best next to Youngpyeon (is that right?) Although...don't expect much if you're from British Columbia or the Northwestern United States. It gets pretty busy, mountains are small (think Eastern North America) and there is very little snow even with all the snow making.

However, it's definitely an experience and you can have a lot of fun if you accept it for what it is. I think it's expensive for what you're paying for. I mean I've paid $8 for lift tickets on hills bigger than what I've paid 40,000 for in Korea.

I've been thinking about taking a snowboard trip to Hokkaido this winter. Anyone done one?

The wife and I got season passes to Jisan for 370,000. We plan to hit the hills every weekend until the season ends. Snowboard and boot rental costs about 7,000 won a day there...or at least that's what it was last year.
