The other day I had a phone interview with LCI Kids Club in Pyongchon. I thought it went really good. I had already decided against it since a few people warned me against Kids Club, but the recruiter called me tonight to tell me the director didn't want me.
He made it sound like it was the way I look which is kind of odd, because I'm a pretty average looking guy, white and 31 years old, not fat, etc. I guess I'll never know if that was the real reason though.
I didn't want the job but it was hard being taken aback a bit for being "rejected". I mean, if I can't get a job at a hogwan... |

Maybe you sounded like you knew what you were talking about. You know, confident and secure in yourself. Some places just want kids just out of school who they can mess around with.
So, really, its a positive. Its a validation of your character. |

Actually, you are lucky you were informed of the decision. Most of the time, no one bothers to tell you. Think how you would feel if you had decided to take the job and were sitting around waiting and waiting for the phone call that wasn't going to come.
Anyway...
It isn't necessarily your age/body type that wasn't acceptable. Many Koreans 'read faces' and make decisions on impressions they pick up from facial expressions. Some major corporations even have on-staff 'professional' face readers in their personnel departments. It could just be that your left eyebrow in your photo is too high or too low or too whatever... |

I am really excited now. I am fat, balding and a good teacher. I will be dismissed by the first 2 and ignored for the latter.
Seriously, I may need to withdraw my cv from some recruiters. I am having second thoughts moving from Thailand to Korea.
Sigh...... |

I wouldn't worry about it.. you had the interview FROM Florida?
My guess is they just got some teacher that was already in Korea. |

I was rejected from a job because I have a lazy eye. The deirector decided this AFTER telling me to come in after I got back from Japan with my visa application stuff. When I arrived, she gave me some mumbling excuse about not wanting to wait for a new teacher and I only found out the true reason from the recruiter I was dealing with.
The very same day I got my current job, and it turned out to be much better. So screw those guys.
But the further away from 20 something WASP-looking you are, the more you'll have to be willing to hunt around.
You may even have to look outside of Seoul. |

The Director probably ran to the fortune teller immediately after interviewing you and the tea leaves said you two should not work together. Not kidding. You need to get pretty close to a Korean for them to admit that they all see fortune tellers on most important descisions they make... |

We had a couple come to work with us back in 1995 with a similar issue. In his picture, you couldn't tell his eye was lazy...but once you met him and started talking to him, you realized that his eye was wandering. The boss fired him right after the welcome kalbi to Korea dinner. Shocking, but true. They found work somewhere I think.
One of the other new teachers who heard about what happened to the lazy eye couple, walked into his first class the next day and pretended to be retarded for the first thirty minutes of his adult class...he did a damn good job of it too, drooled all over the students...hilarious! |

Wow. Brilliant. And they probably felt bad enough to give a release letter too. Absolutely brilliant. |

Heck... you interviewed for a job and did not get it.
It happens.
No need to be offended and as mentionned you are lucky to have gotten feedback since you did not get hired.
Move on to the next job. |

Dude if that offended you, stop worrying about coming to Korea. Find a new dream. Seriously.. read around these boards a bit. Koreans are not gonna coddle you. |

I'm inclined to agree. If this episode shook you, living in Korea will break you. |

Trust me, I got over it very quickly. From reading eslcafe you get the impression most hogwans will pick up anything that walks by as long as its got a heartbeat. So I wasn't expecting a rejection. Maybe I asked all the right questions and they freaked out.
Well, time to continue the job hunt. Ahhh, so many crappy offers, so little time.... |
