I've just finished watching Ken Loach's new movie: The Wind that Shakes the Barley. I'm not an expert when it comes to 1920s Irish history, but the film is certainly very moving. A Korean friend could see many parallels between England/Ireland and Japan/Korea, so it might help in understanding why many Koreans are not particularly fond of Japan. |

I watched it. Not bad. Not bad at all.
There are parallels concerning Ireland/Britain and Korea/Japan. But I feel the Irish have dealt with their troubled history much better than Koreans. The ugly anti-Japanese sentiments encouraged in Korean schools and media is quite shocking to this Irishman. The vast majority of Irish people would never think about the British in that way.
Plus, the Irish don't feel a need to blame the British for anything. They've developed into a confident and secure little country and really couldn't care less about a conflict 80 years ago......
..........of course, there is still a little matter of Northern Ireland! |
