In my opinion......absolutely not. I bring this up because I get this from Americans all the time. "You're Canadian. You guys really don't like us, do you?" I've lived in different parts of Canada(Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver) and I can honestly say that I've met very few people that said they hate Americans. I do think that Canadians hate President Bush and the ultra right wing Republicans. This stems from the fact that we're not that conservative in our thinking in Canada. The Conservative government we have in Ottawa now would be considered a centrist party by U.S. standards. Anyway, I'm even hearing this same sentiment when I meet Americans here in Korea. Maybe I'm out to lunch (it's highly possible Laughing ), but I really don't know where it comes from. If anyone can enlighten me, please do.

When asked, I usually say, "I loathe your country, your political leaders and the havoc you wreak upon the world but I usually don't hate the individual people once I get to know them." The only exception is the 50% of the population that voted Bush in for Round 2.

Disagree. Harper and company is considered a right-winger by U.S. standards. He's definetely not a centrist.

In American politics.. Clinton was a centrist. Canadian Harper would be far right-winger to the Bush degree.

It is hard to really put Harper in perspective since he is Canadian and not American. However, he is associated with right-wing Evangelicals. I do not mean to be discriminatory, but I don't think Evangelicals are quite known to be tolerant of Catholics, go on missions, are more for laws that penalize then for working on the common good. He does not fit the old Tory of the British and Canadian type. He is a new style Tory. So you might be right. His views on Israel were probably influenced by religious conviction rather than political ties and friendships. That is different than a run-of-the-mill Canadian Tory. If you were referring to someone like Peter Mackay or former Conservative leader Joe Clark, then they would be centrists. I am not sure on Peter Mackay.

This topic is overdone, and if it were a steak it would be black and very sick to the taste buds. I think the Canadians are not any different than their Anglo-Saxon counterparts when it comes to views on Americans.
People just bring up the Canadians because they feel Canadians somehow must like America and Americans more. If the U.K. was next door, the title might be different.

I don't know if this topic should be banned--the question will come up again and again as new generations of teachers and trolls happen upon Korea and this board.

What I suggest, seriously, is that the topic be made into a sticky. Some people want to discuss this, others don't to see it revived every fortnight (or less). So why not put it up top where every one get to it, or ignore it?
Obviously the current manifestation of the title won't do, but something to the effect of "Canadian-American Relations in Korea and Elsewhere" would work.

Mods, make it so.

Canadians hating America? That's silly. We're almost the same. Look how many Canadians love Country music and own property in the U.S.

The Canadians you hear complain are the stupid ones who, for example, blame NAFTA because they don't have jobs instead of blaming their own laziness.
