I am about to get an apartment in Bundang, and was wondering which areas of bundang people tend to live. I am getting a place close to my wife's friend's place, which is bit further away from the downtown area (around Samsung Plaza) of Bundang.

Several expats and teachers live in the Royal Palace Housevil, which is very close to Sunae station and Lotte Dept. Store. It's one stop from Seohyun. Zzyfer and I both live here, and I'm told at least 40 other foreigners do. The lowered the cost of the monthly bills too, after a building meeting with the tenants. They're not so awful now as they once were.
It's nice here, but as much as I use the buses to get back and forth to Seoul, I'd rather live at the new Poonglim I-Want building, near Seohyun, which also has the Bennigans restaurant inside.
You should ask around about both!
Another new and happening area is Jeonja station. So many new and unfinished apartments in that area. It's two stops from Seohyun. |

Yea, I live in Royal Palace Housevill, which is excellent for a single guy or girl.
A lot of the CIE guys I know tend to live in the apartments that fall between Sunae Plaza and Sunae 3dong. I've heard mixed stories about those. |

Speaking of new apartment, has anyone heard of "new apartment sickness?" I saw it on Discovery channel when I was in US. The show featured a Japanese family who got sick after moving into a new apartment in Japan. I think it was from whatever the materials they used to build the apartment. I heard that it also happens in Korea as well..... |

I have no idea where Royal Palace Housevil (nor Sunae station nor Lotte Dept. store) is, since I am new to the area. Is it an officetel? I am staying at my wife's friend's place which is not exactly in Bundang. It's located at borderline between Sungnam city and Kwangju city.
The reason why I asked was because I looked at an apartment (kumkang) in Eemae, signed a contract and canceled it because I was so disappointed at the quality of the place. It was in very convenient place right next to the river and a major bus station. But the whole place was old, dirty and mostly kitchen really sucked. I have a family, so I got a place next to my wife's friend's place which has very modernized kitchen. It's only 5-10 minutes bus-ride away from downtown Bundang, so I think it's alright.
I've talked to some realtors around here, and they said Jookjun is the next hot place and many from Bundang are moving there. BTW, my wife's friend has a friend living in I-want officetel and she said the place is awesome for a single person.

How much is the maintenance fee for your building? I am in the Poonlim I-want building at the moment. Dont really like it though. Every so often public service messages blare through the rooms. There is a nice roof garden on the 4th floor though. |

I used to live in Bundang. It's not bad, and I had some great experiences there. However, it's definitely a suburb, which is good and bad in some respects.
One time I saw an ajoshi in Samsung Plaza with his hands covered in blood. Another time I saw a guy at the same place beat the crap out of a waiter.
I lived near Jeongja station when it was still Baekgung station. Not a bad place... |

Ummm... I'll have to check. It was really too high when I got my first few bills. They had all of these weird little charges that were just outrageous. I complained and figured nothing would happen. But then one day, some ajummas showed up at my door and were taking votes to elect them as part of the building committee. Didn't communicate well with them, but good enough to realize they were perturbed about the high monthly fees. Within a month, the fees went down.
They had us paying 1 million won a month for a stupid guest water cooler in the corner near the entrance that no one used (split by all tenants), and the grandpa gardener who trims the bushes (there aren't many) once and a while was getting paid like 2 million a month!!!
I know the "manager fee" was 70,000 and with the rest of the basic fees added up to maybe over 120,000 total. I think it's down from that, though. Have to look. The bill is still in the box downstairs.
I have a korean friend who has an offictell in your building, and I've been out drinking a few times with the Doumi-girls that work in the SportsOne fitness center. Hot and sexy women, but all have boyfriends and by the number of phone calls they were getting from different men, are total players. |

I paid around 70,000 for my first month, but it was prorated to reflect my not living there for about a week or so. I'll be getting the full-on maintenance fee in about a week.
There are also occasional maintenance messages coming through the loudspeaker, but I'm usually not at home to hear them.
yangtheman: Yes, Royal Palace Housevill is mostly officetels, but they do have some larger apartment sizes available (like 20 pyung and up). |

Find Sunae Station on the subway map. Right on top of it is Lotte. Head out Exit 2, and you're walking straight for the Royal Palace Housevil. It's a big copper-colored dual-tower structure that looks like this:
