Tossing up between Ewha or Yonsei for short-term, part-time Korean study.

Which can you recommend? Stories? Hear-says?

(I know there other options, but the mentioned Institutes have convinient schedules)

I think Seogang runs a similar scheldule and would be better than either of these options. I also like Seoul.

The OP may be looking into evening programs which AFAIK Sogang doesn't have.

I brought this up about a year and a half ago in this thread and the consensus seemed to be that Ewha was the way to go.

Even though I brought the thread up, I ended up cutting a deal with my school so that I could work evenings and study in the mornings at Sogang instead.

In case anyone cares, I was very happy with Sogang's Korean program.

I have studied at Ehwa, Yonsei and Sogang. Of the three I reccomend Sogang. But sinse that's not what you're asking, I'll have to go with Ehwa. They focus more on speaking whereas Yonsei is all about grammar.

I studied level 1 of Ehwa's evening course and found it to be quite good. It was all basic survival Korean ie. directions, ordering food, polite speech etc. You also study 1 or 2 grammar structures a day (if I remember correctly). The only down side was that the teacher spoke too much English in class. At first it seems really helpful, but looking back I think she spoke a little too much as all the English speaking students tended to just resort to their mother tongue.

I'm not sure about Yonsei's evening program. I studied there in the morning. But if it is anything like the morning program, it is also worth doing. I found it gave me a really strong grammar base to work with. There was very little emphasis on speaking, but I learned much more grammar in a short time that at Ehwa.

Sogang does have an evening program. I don't know anything about it other than what I read on the website. I'm assuming they use the same text books as the morning classes.

I guess it depends on what your goals are. If you want more speaking opertunities, then check out Ehwa or Sogang. If you want to learn a lot of grammar with a little bit of speaking, then try Yonsei. As long as you put in the effort you will get results, no matter where you study.

Do they give you credit for the classes?

I know Yonsei does. I beleive it's 6 credits per level. Whether universities back home will accept them is another thing. I'm pretty sure Sogang does as well, but I haven't looked into it. Ehwa doesn't.

i studied at ewha one semester, the intensive course. i started half way through level 1 and finished about half way level two. i guess it was a 1b level.

anyway, it wasn't bad, i learned a lot, although if i were to do it again, i'd do the regular course (the 3 times a week one) rather than the intensive. the intensive was really intense and i didn't have much time to let everything sink in.

actually, my experience at ewha was different than a previous poster who said that their teacher spoke too much english. my teachers didn't speak any english (although they could). i think that was a good point.

unfortunately i don't have anything to compare it to. i have heard many times that sogang is really good.

I studied the evening program at Ewha several years ago and enjoyed it. Sogang is better, but Ewha is good.

Especially thanks for the link for Sogang. I looked and looked on the net but who would have thought 서 would be spelt 'so'.

Still not decided though! Sogang looks good but is less hours and more expensive per class... perhaps that's saying something?

I have already studied for 3 semesters at Ewha (last year) and had one great teacher and two terrible ones. But I really liked the syllabus and pace I'm just not sure if I want to risk the teacher thing again.

So, does anybody have any experience taking the evening Sogang course level 3 or 4??
