OK, so I'm from NYC originally, that being said, traffic signals (at least the ones intended for pedestrians) are optional in my world. Every day I have to take a bus, I need to cross two 4 lane (with islands in the middle) and one 6 lane highway to get there. When there is no traffic coming either way, waiting 5 minutes each time to do this offends my sensibilities. Naturally, I wait for a dead spot in the traffic and island hop across. Simple enough, right?
Normally I'm in Ipod land but this week I have noticed that quite often there is a ruckus behind me as I take off. Every time I do the fast walk across, as soon as I start moving, everyone else takes two or three steps before they either start a half panicked running dash across or scamper back to safety. They just start moving without even looking at the crosswalk signal. Occassionally people across the street do the same thing. Of course there is lots of chatter and giggling. So... someone will die, a moment of hesitation will get them killed, is it my fault? I don't know, but I'll probably feel bad about it.
Everyone is so BALLI BALLI all the time here and yet they all stand for eternity at a crosswalk when there are tumbleweeds floating across four empty lanes.
OR, since I'm inherently non-conformist, I'm being passive aggressive here and actually trying to thin the herd.
Had to be said, peace out. |
