Hello people:

I have a general question about whether male or female teachers are preferred in Korea. If one gender is preferred over the other, what are the main reasons for this?

Female. Reason: prettier and viewed as more suitable (maternal influence) for teaching and getting on the good side of young kids.

teacher and sleeping dictionary in one. At least that's what some school owners think.
Guys like to 'steal' their Korean women. BAD FOREIGNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

While the ladies usually stick to other foreign guys. While some girls go for K-men there are a hell of a lot more guys with K-GFs than girls with K-BFs.

although i wouldn't refute some of the reasons above, i would say that more than anything, it is a matter of supply and demand. because there are fewer foreign woman in the market, they (ahem, we) are generally more highly valued.

I've been told by my manager and some recruiters that most schools have just had better experiences with female foreigners. Apparently, they (we) are less likely to throw temper tantrums, make unreasonable demands, and scare the kids (and female Korean staff).

I think smaller towns prefer males actually. I think it has to do with culture shock. If there isn't a strong foreigner community, many women will not renew. Men will simply take to drinking and look for a K-woman. This is just a general observation I have made working the last 5 years in a town of 300,000.

My rural school district now has 1 female public school teacher for 12 males (not all the public schools have foreigners). Ironically she's at Babo Boys Technical High School. It seems she loves the boys but the male teachers drive her up the wall.

In a way I can understand why most women wouldn't like to live in rural Korea but on the other hand I'm surprised it doesn't attract more independent women. Would most young white women really prefer to be wongjongnim's slave at kiddie hogwan in a big, busy city where they can run into more of their own kind, instead of forging ahead for themselves?
