From Reuters:

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch government said on Friday it would seek a way of banning the wearing of burqas and other Muslim face veils in public places, possibly becoming the first European country to impose such a ruling.
The announcement comes at a time when the debate on such veils and whether they prevent Muslims from integrating has gathered momentum across Europe and drawn comments from leaders such as Tony Blair and Italy's Romano Prodi. |
I'm not much of a burqa fan, because I don't really see any purpose for it beyond gender repression and/or segregation. However, I also don't see how any government proclaiming a democratic ideology can pass legislation like this. People have the right to cover their faces in public, period.
From Associated Press:

Around 1 million Muslims live in the Netherlands, about 6 percent of the 16 million population, but only a few hundred are believed to regularly wear a burqa.

Well, the Dutch want freedom of speech and ideas so much they force everyone to adhere to their principles.
The main problem of the Arab community is the lack of integration, the Netherlands want to use a carrot and stick strategy to make the integration go faster, so that immigrants, or second generations don't get stuck in the poverty circle.
If it is illegal to where those cultural icons, it will become very difficult to maintain the strength of the religion on the way they live their lives.
Wether i agree with that point of view is something else. |

what if landed immigrants were able to wear a burqa but their children didn't.
Just a stupid idea. |

Especially given the tiny, tiny number of Muslim residents who actually wear the things.
I suspect the point of this is not so much to ban the buraq as it is to send out a message that the Netherlands doesn't look too kindly on Muslim immigrants clinging to the old ways The burqa is probably being used simply as a cipher for a whole bunch of things. |

Holy cow, you GOT me!!
Seriously, though. With the exception of designated security areas like banks etc, are you aware of any laws against walking around with a ski mask on? If not, I don't see how you can arbitrarily legislate against religious face-covering. |

I wonder how it would turn out, if some bank robber started dressing up in traditonal Pashtun womans clothes, such as the ful covering and robbing banks.
What would the response be, could you stop people on the street or would women be forced to show their faces prior to entering a bank. It could really open a can of trouble, admittedly like most bank jobs the trick would only work a few times before you would have to change it, but the issues that would raise.
I am a little surprised I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet. With the right cuts in the right area, you could walk into a bank with a hidden automatic and then rip it out through the folds, plus your face would be covered.
What are the rules regarding the showing of faces prior to entering a bank in europe. |
