|
|
After several months of driving here I really just dont understand why koreans stand or walk in the middle of a driving lane. They see a car coming and they just ignore it. On more than one occasion I have had to yell at them for blocking traffic. Anybody else experience this phenomena? The worst part is arriving at a public school were kids run in front of a moving car or ignore it altogether. I wonder if they know a car can do some serious body damage? |

Because the road is far safer than the sidewalk and the motorcycles.
I remember once I saw a guy taking a nice sit down rest in the middle a merge lane. |

Why not get a large snowplow and solve the problem? |

Obviously you don't know how things work here. Car hits person...person wins everytime.
If a man is sleeping under your back tire and you roll over him, guess what? You are at fault.
These people are probably hoping you'll hit them and they can make some $$.
Perfect example. Wife was in an accident. She told me she hit an old guy on a bicycle. Police were called. Old man wanted money. I heard this info on the phone and was pissed at my wife.
Here's the information I learned later.
Old guy was over 80 (wtf is her doing driving)
I then looked at the car. There was a scratch right above the front left wheel. Meaning the old dude hit her.
It's all about the $. If a Korean hit a foreigner though...you know we wouldn't see a cent. |

I don't know about accidents involving private car owners, but the bus companies pony up the money if you're a foreigner. A former co-worker (kinda) got 50 mill for injuring her back due to the driver's moronic driving. She could have gotten 100 mill according to the lawyer she spoke to, but she was leaving Korea, so she just took the money offered and left. |

I was rear ended by a korean driver at a toll gate. His insurance paid for my car repair, my phys therapy and I got $800 as cash settlement. |

I got rear-ended by a drunk (and I mean plastered) in Daegu several years ago. For some reason he had more than five million in cash on him (which he really really wanted to give me). His vehicle was crushed. My vehicle had some fiberglass damage. Couldn't take the money though. I was driving a humvee and required to call the MP's. |

The way I understand the law, and granted, this is a few years ago; if you come to a financial settlement at the scene, you dont have to call the police, and after you agree on a settlement, you cannot continue to pursue for more money. I'm sure this doens't include major traffic crime or accidents though. |

Why do Koreans behave the way they do on the road?
* Obliviousness - many of them are totally unaware of their surroundings.
* Lack of consideration for others - I am the centre of the universe and there is no need for me to think about anyone else.
* A feeling that "It will never happen to me" - bad things only ever happen to other people.
Give it time - Darwinism will win out in the end and only the smart ones will survive to reproduce. |
