Hello,

So my high school wants me to teach 2 extended classes a week, (1) 1st level and (1) 2nd level.

The caveat is that there is no co-teacher. Having taught with my co-teachers now for 2 weeks, I think this is not a good idea. The students command of English as a whole isn't that great. And you always give instruction at 1 level higher then what you teach normally.

The classes will be 80 minutes.

Anyone have any recommended resources or activities I should look into?

Here's the irony of it all, apparently the classes are booked full. Parents were calling the school complaining that their "Little Jimmy or Susie" couldn't get into the class. Which, ok if Little Jimmy or Susie were enthusiastic about English it'd be great...but I have this sneaking suspicion that it's more parental motivated.

I also teach extra classes, but at a middle school. I actually like not having a coteacher; leaves me freedom to develop the class.

Before running to the bookstore or whatever, meet with each class one time and have some activities that will give you an idea of what the average level of English is. Undoubtedly, you'll have a few at either end of the spectrum, but don't become overly concerned. Focus on the average and get your material for them (you can modify from that).

You'll probably find a few parents who think their child should be in the more advanced class. Don't worry about them; public school is not a hagwon and money is not a big factor (unless you are unfortunate enough to be at a school financed directly by the parents).

I enjoy the extra classes. I can challenge the students to think more about what and how things are said; it isn't so much listen and repeat (memorizing).

You are fortunate because you can also challenge highschool students with more writing skills.

Take charge and do what you feel is best.

I'm in the process of setting up extra classes.

The school wants them but doesn't know what it wants so I'm offering them two separate ability groups.

A low but keen group and an advanced but keen group.

Low group will learn the basics that they are missing like numbers and personal information.

High group will get various activities - I'm going to try a few drama ones to get them speaking a bit louder and clearer.

I'm going to start my own after school classes soon too. There's a lot of demand. I'm thinking I can use that to my advantage and really get students who want to work and learn. Slackers are gonna get booted from the class and I'll just take the next person in line.
