Not sure what started it, but a fight broke out between two of my middle school students.
I wanted to say, "This here ruckus makes yall look gayer than a pink shirt wearing Abba fan in prison."
I restrained myself from commenting sarcastically on this pathetic session of male slapping, book hurling, punching, and in the end tears.
It went on for a good minute before I bothered to get up and glare at the two boys. They immediately sat down and behaved afterwards. Pissed me off royally to because I was having a good conversation with one of the more soft spoken girls in the class.
Not sure why I even bother to post about it. However, it seems to me that for all these Tae Kwon Do classes kids take they sure fight like a bunch of sissies. Whatever happen to their daddy teaching them how to throw hands properly?
I think I might be in a bit of hot water over it after I started laughing at the to boys and told them in no uncertain terms that I have seen girls go at it better than they did. To bad.. had it been a good fight I might have let it go on longer rather than just let the boy that seemed to have been provoked getting in a few feeble punches. |

Wow that is hysterical. Look what dongbangshingi is doing to Korean males!! The next generation's ajeoshi is gonna be a subservient little pecker literally being pushed in a cart through E-Mart while he licks on a lolli and begs his wife for suh-nack!

Bizarro course of action you took there, sarge. I mean.. a fight breaks out, you let it go on for several minutes, and institute scowling and teasing as the only forms of recourse? Surely you jest!! |

Only time I let fights happen to any degree was in the hogwon. Because it had a calming effect on the class afterwards. Its almost that if you don't let them resolve their differences, then the tension continues on and on unabated. Just get it over with then you can all be friends afterwards.
However at my school now I always break it up before they get going. Way too uncivilised for the seat of learning I'm in now. |

No Quinella you ADGADSFADSFADSGADFADSASDFSD!!!!!
I watched it go on for a minute... scowled at them... They sat down...
about ten minutes later as class was finishing I booted them both out the door after laughing at them and heckling their fighting skills.
Didn't want them getting all wound up again to prove me wrong in my classroom. They can take that feeble crap out into the parking lot. |

Can't say they were really going full on enough for me to want to get up and do something about it. After about a minute of worthless titty bumping I stopped it out of boredom. I have had fights before and when they are good ones with some potential for damage I tend to break them up quickly. Not good policy to let them get out of hand, but then you have to let them make their screw ups in life. Run your mouth.. get popped.. sort of the way it goes. |

It hasn't happened in my class yet, but I've often wondered what I would do should the situation arise. After assessing my students (I'm also in middle school) I'm pretty sure that I would react in exactly the same way that you did! |

That is the spirit! Use it to bring about a learning experience if you can. For example:
Two kids fighting...
You say, "That was an upper cut. Can we say Upper cut?"
The kids say, "Upppel Cut-e"
You say, "No damn it. Upper.. RRRR... Upper Cut"
The kids say, "Upper cut"
You say, "Good gracious that is what we call a Bitch slap. Can we say Bitch slap?"
Kids say, "Bitch-u slappu!"
You say, "Close enough." |

I've wondered that myself. But it's classic Korea. They spend years learning English but the second they're actually asked to use it in the real world, they come up snake eyes. I'm not surprised they can't apply TKD in a real fight. I remember one boy made a big thing about his black belt or whatever in TKD. So I picked up my ruler and asked him to show me what he'd do if this was a knife. His move was to flail away with his hands. Geez. |

At my old hogwan there was a MS class that had a boy with a black belt plus some other degree. The dominant girl would routinely mop the floor with him.
Good point, Mindmetoo. When it comes to doing something they've been rehearsing for months, Koreans can put on quite a show. However, at anything practical, all their training is worthless. |

| Another reason to let kids be kids I guess. So they can learn to kick the crap out of each other properly. |

Ya, ironically that seems to be what some of these jokers consider discipline. Why again did he hate his old hogwon? They make him work and not be a ref? |

Funnily enough, we were just discussing this topic in the teachers room.
My partner teacher was wondering what to do about one of our kindergartens who punched another boy and asked me what usually happened in Canada. I replied that, in public school, the kid would be sent to the principle's office immediately and usually be given a few days suspension. A call to the parents was also normal.
A couple of the other teachers chimed in with such suggestions as give lines or ignore it. One actually said she would usually let the child who got attacked get a "free hit" on his/her attacker. "If one kid punched another without the other kid getting a punch back, I would usually tell that one to got ahead and hit him". |

| Letting them even it up like that sounds a bit extreme. I say if they are in danger of hurting each other then yeah break it up quickly. If they aren't doing much damage let them look goofy. Still once you move to intervene the fight needs to stop then and there, and no letting anyone get in a free hit to settle the score. |

They kind of made fun of that in the Korean movie The Foul King. A guy is abused by his boss, who puts him in a headlock and challenges him to get out. He wants to learn how to defend himself and get out of his boss's headlocks. First thing he does is goes to a TKD instructor, who has his whole head and neck in a brace. Every question the guy asks, the TKD instructor always answer "I would kick him". |
