Hi everyone -

Sorry if this has been posted before, but my search was unproductive.

Does any body know of a martial arts place that I could attend without much knowledge of Korean?

I live in Ilsan - northern suburb of Seoul - any advice would be great. I could travel into Seoul if it's not too far and easy to find...

Thanks,
Deborah

Go to Daehwa station and go past kb bank and keb bank on that same side of the street. If you are going to the sports complex you are going the wrong way. Your direction should be going to la festa. cross the street going from the LG store to the store just across the street. Now somewhere in that building like up on the 5th floor or something is a tae kwon do academy. I had a friend who took some courses their and she liked it.

this has been done to death on this site, but the search function is not very effective... so I sort of excuse you.

Korean is not necessary to learn any physical activity.

TKD is not the best for all people, though it's easy to find.

PM me if you want more specific info.

I've been studying martial arts in Korea daily for about 3 years now, and my Korean sucks. Seriously, in studying martial arts, knowledge of Korean would be a bonus but not a necessity, so I wouldn't worry about language. Your most important decision is which art to study. There are many which are popular in Korea. I am not familiar with Ilsan, but if it's like the rest of Korea, I'm sure there are Taekwondo, Hapkido, Kumdo, Haedong Kumdo, Muay Thai, and Judo schools there. Just pick one and don't sweat the language issues too much.

Check out www.sangmookwan.com/, I hear they offer a great program in Incheon (IHF Myung Jae-nam lineage Hapkido and Hankido). They also have produced a very good Hankido video and are working on a second one.

edit- I'm having trouble getting the link to work, I am looking at the site here: http://www.sangmookwan.com/
If it doesn't link, just google "sang moo kwan" and it will come up

You might also ask yourself what type of martial arts you'd like to learn. If you want to get a good workout and get into competition, try taekwondo but if you do, don't expect to get the same self-defense and fighting training you'd get from learning other arts.

Despite what others have told me and my three-plus years training in taekwondo, I'm wouldn't advise taekwondo for someone who wants to learn effective self-defense.

Taekkyon is good for self-defense, but if you are willing to get roughed up a bit, I'd suggest boxing or K-1.

Boxing, Brazilian jujitsu, hapkido and teukgongmusool (hand-to-hand combat) gyms are also available if your main focus is self-defense.

This site might have more info, but tell me first what you'd like to train in and then I can get more data.

I have sent you a PM regarding a Tukkong/Teukgong Moosool school in Ilsan.

Cheers.
