I have been asking a lot of questions and realize I should have just put them in one thread. I swear, this one is useful! I am planning on bringing my laptop to Korea. I was wondering whether a standard converter will do or whether I need something special and complex? Also, should I purchase the converter in Canada or in Korea?

Thank you!

All recent laptops, 5 years or younger have transformers in them. So the power is not an issue. You can buy a little convertor for 50 cents here. The only thing is it won't have the 3rd grounder. I use it, and have for 4 years with no problem. If you are weary about it, pick up a convertor that will change a 3 prong to a 2 prong, then once here you can get one that changes the flat prong to round.

Or you can buy a transformer here. The cheapest I have seen them is 35,000 won at a place called Home Ever. But the transformer is not mandatory to protect your computer.

what is a 3rd grounder?

Is it just a prong converter?

What things use that plug?

T

The third odd shaped ("^") prong is a safety plug. A sudden surge of electricity causes the unit "throw the circuit breaker." It turns the unit off. Computers and other electronic equipment have them as a protective measure.

The person was saying you can buy an adapter that fits to the three prongs and make it into a two prong plug. The last adapter fits onto the flat prongs on one side, then the other side has the rounded side to fit the wall sockets in Korea.

If you by-pass the protective plug by cutting it off, you risk electrical hazard should your computer overheat or have an some kind of electrical problem.
