How many offers, or contracts, did you turn down before you accepted your current position? It doesn't have to be an actual offer, as in: "you got the job, when can you be here?" It could be a recruiter sent you a contract, or the school did, and you just didn't like it so you turned it down without further discussion, besides saying "no thank you." Especially for the first time teachers.
Or, how many schools turned you down before you were granted your current position. Or a mix of both? |

| I turned down more than a dozen, but I already had a pretty good idea of where I was going to be. I was just fishing on the off-chance someone offered me something I couldnt turn down. |

| Ya, I haven't ever been turned down by any, though I haven't received anything back from some. I apply for many jobs, sometimes way over my qualifications, but never hear back from most of them. I turn down way too many myself. I usually don't do a complete check of a school until they show interest. Then I do and turn them down (there are so many bad schools out there). |

Been turned down by all the unis in Busan so far this year. Even when I was offered interviews they would never give me a time and date, then I never heard anything back.
Turned down some good hagwon gigs because of long/late hours
Turned down by EPIK because I didnt have a Celta (even though I had 2+ years exp at that time with at least 7 months of that IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS........ that one ticked me off no end.
I'm hoping to land a good high school gig next year - hopefully I won't be turned down by all of those! |

Thanks for the responses. Here's another related question for those who have been dumped by their recruiter. I mean dumped, as in they told you, "We gave you (this many) offers and you didn't take any, so we will cease working with you." Not one who just stops contacting you. There could be other reasons for that.
So how many turned down offers (again it doesn't have to be a "you got the job" offer, it could just be your recruiter sent you a contract that you didn't particularly like) did it take before your recruiter dumped you?
Or are they indefatigable, and will give you 142 different contracts before you finally sign?
My answer to this is 3. |

If you will a white face and speak English from one of the English speaking countries, they won't let you go. They might ignore you a bit, but they would be back. |

I turned down six. Two of those were EPIK; there are some variances in their contracts. Accepted one from EPIK through a recruiting agency.
Weird thing is, is that the person calls me once a week to make sure I'm still coming and to practice his English (I think). Really though, it's probably because the area is rural (population 200,000) and he's afraid I'll opt out for a larger city.
Truth is, I live near a town with a population of only 8,000. My nearest neighbor is about a quarter of a mile away! So shucks -- 200,000 is huge to me!
A side note. One school I turned down (Knk) is advertising again. Looks good as advertised, but their contract has to be the top contender for the worst of the year.

I speak North American English, and I'm white. But I'm also old (41), and I asked for too much money (2.1). That's what he told me after I turned down the third contract. That and the fact that I turned down 3 contracts in 10 days. I never really turned down the second one, I just had questions about the contract. I don't think he's coming back.
My first recruiter bailed on me after one offer. I never saw the contract, they just told me the name of the school, and the basic information. I did a search on it and found a few negative comments, very negative, like people doing midnight runs. Also that this recruiter pushes that school all the time. So I mentioned the negative comments to the recruiter (not about them pushing the school), and I never heard from them again. How can I read that about the school and ignore it? I've since found out that the school may be okay, but again, how could I ignore what I initially read? And they didn't give me much time to make a decision.
Anyway, these were two of the, so called, reputable recruiters often mentioned here. And I think I just offended my third recruiter. This contract was the worst of them all: No vacation, or sick days are two highlights of the contract. Plus 6-8 classes per day. I think I've heard the last from this recruiter too. Soon I will be blacklisted.
So I asked these questions to see if I was being too picky, or if what I'm doing is normal. And to see how patient your recruiters are. It seems like I'm not the only picky one. I figure with so many schools out there, I can afford to be a little picky. Especially after seeing the "Who has a great job?" thread.
So I just placed my resume here again, and added "No Recruiters Please." How many recruiters do you think will respond? |

| If any recruiters respond, they will probably be good. It's great to hear people like yourself standing firm. |
