i sent resumes off to both their regular program and foreign language institute just for kicks.

when the FLI responded with an offer of 1.8 for 26 hours/5 days/M-Sat i told them i was not at all interested in the terms of the contract and would definitely not be coming to the screening interview.

but a couple days later i got another email saying i passed the first stage screening, and that they'd like to talk to me. dudes, that was the easiest interview ever! i didn't respond.

still, i guess i passed the second round, because i just got emailed a contract to sign!

university contract spam!

so sad.

ROBT.

Wow, you must be good. Have fun with them on this--insert the most ridiculous thing you can think of into the contract, see if they go for it.

Actually, Korea is going to have to do something about it's ESL problem. Either train the locals to do it, clean up the hagwon industry or stop offering crap jobs that seem to be getting worse sometimes. THey lose an amazing number of public school teachers because they would rather have them sit around the main office doing nothing for two weeks straight than give them that time off. The hagwons will rip anybody off (and do so on a frequent enough basis). And the unis need to up their requirments and what they offer (as much as I would like to get a uni job, I shouldn't be able to. I can to easily though). I don't mean uniwons either.

Pretty bad compared to its glory days as a Holy Grail job. BUT a place in Daejeon has got it beat... 1.7 for 28 hours in-class, 10 hours office, and 2 hours coffee class... and only 4 weeks vacation.

These would definitely be an "Excuse me while I laugh in your face" offers.

Other than the vacation time, that is.

Certainly. I would also take the time to tell them if I worked those very same hours at my last hogwan, I would have been making close to 4.0. Laugh in their face, indeed.

I just turned down a university job with 5 months vacation. NO HOUSING ALLOWANCE and the provided housing is too small for all the stuff my wife and I have. Take that and the big/month pay cut with no airfare, it is simply not attractive as it would have been 2 years ago (when I had no chance in hell of getting a uni job).

I don't have an MA and I am seriously wondering why they don't provide better benefits to attract qualified teachers.

PS

No yearly bonus either.

Because they don't need to attract qualified teachers.

Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentelmen.

Let's not let a good topic go to waste, shall we?

Desperation seems to have taken hold at Yonsei FLI. I would like to thank all of you who spread the word.

Allow me to make a final request.

Would you kindly inform all those you know of the new, less stringent requirements to work at FLI (a heartbeat and a four-year degree in anything)? How about that coworker of yours who cares not a bit about teaching or better yet your second cousin twice removed who's about to get out of prison in a week, tell them about the job.

For only after those in charge have to start dealing with the complaints from the soon-to-be defrauded students about the sure-to-be interesting individuals hired without even interviews, will they possibly realize the consequences of their actions. Then again, maybe they won't, but maybe those higher up will finally realize something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

It is unfortunate that the students may have to suffer a bit before the truth comes out. However, that is likely what must happen for certain individuals to be reprimanded and reassigned elsewhere.

Thanks
