I'm going to Boracay for about 10 days starting Jan. 20th, and I have a Lonely Planet book I've been checking out. It says that a lot of rooms and huts have fans instead of air conditioning.

1. Is this doable in a tropical climate? I was in Thailand the same time last year and it was humid and stinking hot. I don't think I could have slept in that heat with only a fan.

2. Would it be worth the extra money to spring for air conditioning and hot water showers?

3. How long is White Beach Path? If I get a lower priced hotel at the south end, how long will it take to walk to the bars and restaurants in the north end? Is it possible to get a trike/ride to the north end?

4. Because it will be high season, would you recommend booking in advance? We will be staying in Manila for a few days first. Should we book from there?

5. When traveling to Boracay is it ok to book a flight to Caticlan when we get there, or again should I book in advance? Is it cheaper and as easy to take a bus?

Thanks in advance to all those in the know who are hopefully able to answer my questions....

With the sea breezes it is doable. Temps are quite moderate 26-30 in Jan.

How much like camping do you want? The difference in price between air and fan is only about $10 per day or $100 for your vacation.

White beach is 3.5 km (2 miles long). There are pedal trikes on the beach side and there is a road behind that has motor trikes. 90% of the places are in the central mile of the beach so walking (or staggering after a night out) is not a problem.

It may be a little difficult to get prefered accomodation without some advance booking. See quote below.

You can USUALLY catch a flight from MNL to Caticlan without too much difficulty BUT if you want to make sure you have a flight on your prefered dates you should book in advance. SeaAir ( http://flyseair.com/index.php ) or Asian Spirit ( http://www.asianspirit.com/ ) both fly into Caticlan on a daily (several flights) basis.

This is quoted from one of my previous posts:

It won't be easy or cheap during the last week of December in Boracay.

Best bet is to try some of the Philipine style resorts. They will only run you about 15-30k won per night (including breakfast).

I can think of the A-rock, Tonglen, the cottages behind Alices, rooms above D'mall if you are staying for more than a week. There will be something but it may not be all that nice.

You can reserve rooms at places like Nigi-Nigi for about 45k won per night (double). Best happy hour on the beach and decent cottages.

Slightly lower priced is CASA CAMILLA http://pages.zdnet.com/AsiaBill/id1.html . Tell Bill or Lorna that a friend from AWAWA recommended you.

I prefer the fans.. mostly because they keep the mosquitos away and don't get sick or catch a cold from the AC being on all night.

White Beach Path is completely walkable from one end to the other.. I did that most everytime I did a walk. The south end is built up a lot more.. the northern end is where it really spreads out.. the business establishments take up a lot more space.. the path turns into just walking the beach. South end, no problem at all.

Flying to Catlican. I'd book ahead. Its easy to do.. you can do it on the internet.
