In light of this statement from the "Business Hub" thread:

One thing they really need is an addressing system.
Street names and numbers to identify a location. Not this -dong, -ri, -gun, -eup, landmark based system. |
Would anyone care to expand on that? What do the suffixes stand for? How do they relate to getting mail?
Thanks |

There are no "street addresses" in korea as we know them. Your mailing address is a series of different districts, followed by a building number, which may or may not be sequential to any buildings near your building. (I heard the buildings are numbered in the order they are built). SO, basiclaly, there is no way to find anything in this country since they don't use street names or building numbers.
In the city, a "gu" is a big district, which is divided into smaller "dong" districts. In teh country, a "gun" is the equivalent of the "gu", and then "eup" and "ri" are smaller, but I don't really understand those last two.
So, forget being able to use a good old street map and address to find something. YOu have to have directions like across from x, turn left, walk to the family mart, turn right. COmpletely idiotic. |

| Yeah, one of the most secure jobs in Korea is being a post/mailman. They're the only ones who actually can find half the addresses! |

According to my new Incheon map, a new address system is supposed to be implemented starting next month. And used exclusively by 2012.

True.
On a lighter note, one of the many, many kids in one of my many, many classses had some "goo" in a plastic cup (it's a toy). I explained to the kids that it's called "goo", and they all kept telling me their "-gu"- OKAY, it's not FUNNY, but it's worth posting. Right? RIGHT? |
