It's really interesting that you mention that. I was daydreaming about the same thing tonight before I came to the internet cafe. I'd like to hear some stories from anyone who does this. |

you can't add a korean bank account to your paypal account unless you are a korean... stupid paypal rules... even if they did let you though, they charge a 3% curency conversion fee. also, on standard accounts, i think the withdrawl limit is $500/mo iirc |

My understanding is people use to do it with international debit cards (this is just what've heard, so I might be wrong). Korean banks are making it very difficult to get international debt cards now. Even if you can get one, it is not the same thing I have in the US. I think the Korean Government is afraid people will bypass the $10,000 a year limit. Go figure.
Anyway there was a really LONG thread about getting an international debt card in Korea recently. |

I sent money to my mother that way with my husband's credit card. They own a business so the cut was discounted. Worked like a charm -- she was able to access the money pretty much right away. |

Has thi not been mentioned? There is NO FREAKING $10,000 LIMIT. None. There is no limit on how much you can move out of the country. The $10,000 figure is on how much you can move WITHOUT DECLARING. If you want you can move $10,000,000 or 10,000,000,000 as long as the money is declared. |

Anyone know where this thread is?
I'm four months new to Korea. I write as a sideline. I need to be able to buy over the internet services and products.
So far, after four months of trying I have not been able to do either.
I naively thought, with LG, Samsung and others, South Korea would be in tune to the information age and the internet. I was wrong.
I find it unbelieveable that foreigners can't be issued a debit card that can be used on the internet.
I have a public school job, make decent money, have an ARC but I can't get a debit card that can be used internationally?
I've gone to KB, Woori, one other I can't remember and opened an account at KEB after finally finding SOMEONE who spoke passable English and was told, "yes, we have internet banking and yes you can buy over the internet."
Yes, I can check how much money I have loaned to KEB but I cannot buy over the internet.
The longer I'm here, the more I've come to realize Korea is still an agrarian based economy in many respects.
What''s this 'foreigners can't do this and foreignhers can't do that mentality?"
We Americans have been protecting the paranoid here for 57 years, but we can't buy and sell on the internet while were in this country? |

Not quite the same thing you wrote I've got a paypal account that clears through my Korean credit card which really is just a fancy debit card for my KEB account since it must be paid every month unless I choose the extended option at payment time. |

there must be some catch. You have a Korean credit card good internationally? Did you get it recently?
There is no way KEB would give me a credit card. They wouldn't even give me a Visa/MC debit card which is what I need. They did, but it was an ATM debit card good "Only in Korea." [It seems Koreans think only Korea exists].
Worthless for the internet and PayPal. |

KEB wouldn't give you this?

Maybe the person you spoke to didn't know it exists. Hahaha. Very likely, I'm afraid. |

Looks like the same one I have.
I've tried numerous times and been back to the bank countless times, doesn't work with PayPal. I've given up as the tellers think I'm a pain in the keister because I actually expect the account/card to work as it's suppose to.
The notice I get from PayPal says the bank has not approved the card.
I just tried again and got this:
"This credit card has been denied by the bank that issued your credit card. For details on why your card was denied, please contact your credit card issuer's customer service department. Or, you may want to try adding a different credit card."
Has any foreigner here in Korea actually have a PayPal account that uses just a Korean card? Not one going through the wife or a card they brought with them from a Western country, but a bonifide Korean bank issued debit card that is supposed to work on the internet?
Also, as a side but just as important issue, what if I travel abroad? Doesn't my ATM card work outside of Korea? What am I suppose to do, carry large sums of cash?
this place is crazy. |

I have a Woori bank card. It worked while I was in Thailand this past summer. Pretty happy about that. |

Meegook. It is possible to use a Korean credit card on the internet, inc. paypal. It can be used on non-Korean sites. From KB, I got a Star Visa card. Any foreigner can open an account.
You need to put down a security deposit. Min. 1.5 million Won. This money is held as security, but it's put in a high interest account. You also need to open a normal savings account from which your credit card bills are taken every month.
If you go into a random KB branch, chances are they won't have a clue. My local branch were adamant I couldn't get a card. However the Itaewon branch will give you the card. It'll take about 30 mins to sort out in the bank. You'll get the card in a week or so. Make sure you tell them you want to access internet banking, as this requires another form. Get them to go over what you need to do in order to access internet banking, as it's a tad complicated to activate, but easy after that. |

I don't live anywhere near Seoul/Itaewon.
I'll try again here where I am, it is a city of 500,000 but the bank clerks haven't got a clue and speak two words of English - Mee-gook.
I'll take your info and give it another shot, as I have to have this capablity. Thanks.
What takes 30 minutes in the US takes 30 days here, if at all. |
