Well, I've been to Phuket, but would like to see something new. Anyone been to Ko Samui? What's it like? Any stories, info, or whatever you can tell me would be appreciated. I am definitely not interested in the sex-tourist type of area, or drugs, and am hoping there isn't much of that there.

Mainly, I'm just looking for a fun 'backpacker' scene, meeting fun 20-somethings and going on little adventures, doing some interesting exploring, trying out different foods, living in cheap but nice accommodation, lying on the beach and drinking / reading a book. I'd be up for a night or two of clubbing maybe. I am also the type to enjoy my Starbucks latte while heading to a secluded area, so in other words, I like touristy areas but also secluded ones. Best of both worlds there...

Anyone suggest anything? Is it better than Phuket? What is the type of person there like? Family, scum, or backpacker?

*p.s. and if anyone wants to meet up there in January, send me a PM! Cool

if you want a fun 'backpacker' scene, then you prob want ko phangan rather than ko samui.

if you want to drink at starbucks and hang out with old german couples wearing swimsuits a little too small for their figures then ko samui is prob the best bet.

or so i've heard anyway.

Been there 3 times. Chaweng is way too touristy. Lamai is a bit better and cheaper. The island has many quaint areas. It basically has whatever you want. I always stayed in Lamai as it seemed to have the nightlife, good restuarants, dive shops and beach. Obviously, Chaweng is best for shopping.

Excellent. Would anyone say this island is better than Phuket?
