I can't believe it! I got through the weekend on just 25,000 won.
No! I didn't stay home and order a pizza.
I went out and watched a movie, went to two coffee shops, and a jazz bar.
I pulled this off, in part, by eating all meals at home.
Just curious about the spending habits of people on Dave's. Korea is heaven for people who want to save a lot of money and still have somewhat of a life. I don't know too many places in the world where you can do it so well.
So, how Much Money Did You Spend Last Weekend (including Friday evening)? |

| I was shopping. Normally I don't spend anywhere close to that. I might spend 100,000 in a week, but usually less. |

I put 50-79 because that included our grocery shopping for the week and a pizza from Domino's as a special treat.
One week's groceries = 50,000 (21 meals)
One large pizza from Domino's and a Sprite = 18,000. (1 meal)
Craziness, I tell you. Cooking your own food saves sooooo much money. |

I ended up going to the supermarket 3 days in a row (I CAN'T BELIEVE butter is 5250 won- WTF?????). Each time I spent 30,000 or so. Then I went to a plant nursery, and spent 20,000 (I needed a pointsettia to complete my Xmas decorating- damn thing is already losing leaves ). Then I went to a hair salon and spent 60,000 won (left the discount card at home accidentally). It was a more expensive weekend than normal, actually.... Anyway, OP, 25,000 for a weekend is impressive. |

A bunch of us in a bar, and only few paid when it was time to leave. So ended up paying more than usual ie. about 30-40K more than my share. Otherwise nothing unusual. Weekends are the only times I get time to spend. But some people are just cheap.
OTOH: spent almost 60K in Costco on Sunday.
Net: over 150K or so. |

Wow! Just 60K. You must have showed some restraint. The lowest Costco trip for me is 75,000 won, but average is about 120,000 won. For 60K, you can only get 4 or 5 items at Costco. |

I'm really interested to know what you are cooking that cheaply. 21 servings of chicken or fish alone would cost 80k or so. Please inform.
I spent way too much this weekend because of shopping. Grocery, helment, birthday.. Also donated some money to a friend in the US via Paypal. Maybe in total 700k? Oosh. |

Left early saturday and sunday, and did two camps They took me out to dinner after each one. Went home, talked to family for the evening. Was already stocked up on cigarettes and alcohol was off the menu this weekend. |

The last 2 weekends I've spent in excess of 200,000. Probably average about 150,000 on a night out. Fridays are usually a lot cheaper than Saturdays but by the time I'm asleep on a Sunday the total expenditure often averages out above the 200k mark.
Note: I don't spend it all on myself. |

Ah! restraint... I wish.
Rather a handicap - I dont cook. So as you say 4-5 items - cereal, olives, juice, some thai sauce and a fresh slice of pizza.
Wife joins soon and this expense will surely bloat. |

Already had rice, kimchi, eggs, potatoes, onions, peanut butter, jam, some canned peaches, lettuce, a couple of soup packets, and ham. Bought some more eggs, some veggies, apples, oranges, mandu, cereal, milk, water, Spaghetti, Spaghetti Sauce, bread. Ground beef
It's so cheap this week because we stock up on basics. We actually spend 300,000 on groceries for two people each month. Also, we live in Pohang. We allow 40,000 per month on eating out. Sorry to be misleading. If we weren't living on one income, we'd probably buy more food or go out to eat more, but I'm putting the man through law school. Rice...lots of rice.
We shop at a local supermarket, nothing fancy. No Costco, no E-Mart.
We also eat a lot of the same stuff, just combined differently.
Fried rice
Rice with ham and eggs,
Scrambled eggs
Omelettes
Mashed potatoes
Spaghetti
Sandwiches
Toast
French Toast
Fried mandu
Mandu-guk
Baked potatoes
Salad
Cereal
Burgers
Meat loaf
Fruit (snacks or breakfast)
The dishes listed above are all options for what to cook using the ingredients we had and we try to have a good variety whenever possible. |
