|
|
Hi all, first post.
I am a 42 year old Australian with a Masters degree in Marine Biology, a Bachelor of Education and have just about finished my second year of High School teaching in Australia. I have been teaching Art, Math, Science, Workshop and Computing (I will have a crack at anything )
Is it possible for me to get work teaching at the tertiary level?
I shave my head, will this be a disadvantage in obtaining jobs?
Is there much surf in Korea?
I have had a number of other questions, but many of them have been answered by searching and reading the FAQs.

Regarding the shaven head, that shouldn't be a problem in obtaining a job. As has been stated before, if an employee discriminates based on your appearance, then it's not likely a job you want to have, anyway. I used to shave my head until rather recently, and the only problem I ever encountered was people (mostly kids but some adults) constantly wanting to touch it. And, they said it looked bad.
Don't know about the other stuff. |

Yes, but unlikely as long as you are abroad. Most hire from inside the country.

In no uncertain terms, yes.

There is NO surf to speak of in Korea, certainly none that would compare to your typical "surf breaks" found in places like Oz.

| You sound like you are doing well at home. Why do you want to come here..it is a step backward for you. Teaching in Korea is not a career move in any way. I would make sure you know what you are deciding. Most people here would trade places with you. |

I have to disagree. If you research and find a good job here, it is well worth the experience. You can save a lot of money here too. Perhaps pay down a big part of your mortgage or put a down payment on some property. If you work at a university you will have plenty of time to travel and experience Asia.
Oh yeah, the women are hot too. |

Surf in Korea...dunno.Taiwan does.
Shaved head,tattoos,whatnot...likely to be more of a problem with Korean adults than students per se. |

About the shaved head thing. I've had 'monk hair' for many years. Korea is the ONLY country (out of 42) where I have been made to feel extremely uncomfortable about having no hair.
My boss made me grow my hair when I first arrived, because I was 'scaring' the students. Apparently, gangsters in Korea have shaved heads.
That said, I've had a baldy for 1 & 1/2 years now and everyone at school is used to it.
I do think that it stops me getting jobs (uni jobs) though.
When I teach, I just wear a baseball cap. And you will too after everyone stares at you. |

I don't think it would really matter. Schools that cater to kids might not like it, but they'll hire anyone any way. Schools catering to uni students and/or adults would not care as long as you otherwise appear professional.
I've had plenty of coworkers with shaved heads. |

I like change. I left Marine Biology as I was getting bored, and completed a 2 year BEd at 40.
Now I want more change, so am planning to teach English in a number of countries over the next few years, starting in Korea. I am a good teacher and teach Math and Science so wont find it hard getting a job when/if I want to come back to Australia.

Last day here for our senior students. My head is getting touched in the corridors every few minutes. I had one kid follow me for 40 m with his hand on my head I can deal with that.

They claps their hands together, stick up their two index fingers, and shove it right up your butt. Grown men do this to each other here too though I saw it happen in an Emart by two workers who were obviously bored... |
