I go back and forth on the issue of whether it's worth the time and effort. Lately I've been leaning away from it. Mostly I'm just curious of how you have addressed the question, of how you've chosen to direct your life. |

I did one year here in Korea and then due to unforseable circumstances (read: money) joined the workforce. And I feel much better in the business side of things than academia. I guess I was fed up with academic things. Sure, I did read papers and even published 2 during that 1 year.
I guess it depends what you want to do in the future and where do you see yourself and most importantly do you enjoy it otherwise its going to be a misery. I love my major but PhD was not competitive enough nor a high-pressure environment which is what I usually like.
Reason why I went into it is that I wanted to be a univ. professor teaching to undergrads and grads because this is also what I also enjoy doing and had many experiences during my MS degree. |

Why I chose the road less travelled, of course.

After my MA I didn't like the idea of slaving away for another 5 years for something I'd probably get an F on.
I was becoming enough of a career student as it was.Besides, one large dose of academia like an MA was enough.
I'd like to entertain the thought of returning for a long stint, but, moneywise and realistically,no thanks. |

Thinking about it fofr the future as a way to keep busy... probably do Lit or something anthro....dont know though. I've heard any PhD is a beastly amount of work to get through. Do you have to have an MA before you get a PhD, or can you roll them into one? |

If you kick arse on a BA(Hons) ie 1st class honours, you could possibly just move straight through to a doctorate.
I think a MPhil kind of straddles an MA and PhD.
It would be an obscene amount of stuff to get through.
Even a critical bibliography....아이구.............. |

Started my PhD in 2001, then 9/11 occurred and my wife was laid off her job. Decided to come back to Korea, now into a nice groove and I dont think I'll go back to it. Also I found myself 5 years ago to be a couple of steps slower than my classmates which was discouraging
Besides its 4 years of your life and at my age who would employ a feshly minted close to 50 something PhD? |

Well, I do have a very strong desire to study the philippine culture. There are so many things about that cultrue that interest me, I have no idea where to start. I thought maybe donig a PhD would give me some structure and guidance. It would also be nice that after spending 5 or ten years studying something, even just for pleasure, to have a scrap of paper at the end.... (I dont think thats a very good reason byt itself though.) |

Have always known that I wanted to do my PhD when I am about 33 or so. That's in 3 years' time, which is perfect because Letty will be starting junior school then and we can study together!
I am not an English major, but rather a Business major, so experience in the workplace is vital and that's why I knew 33 would be a good age as that would give me some 10 years of experience.

I'm already over-qualified for just about everything with a stupid BA. More education = bad. |

Don't you have a wicked major as it is...I think you mentioned before something like Southeast Asian studies with a concentration in Security Relations? I can't remember what thread I saw that in. |

I started a PhD, but decided that academia was not where I wanted to go, and handed it in for a MPhil

Generally speaking you dont need one nor should you bother to get a masters IF your absolutely sure your going to try and get one. Usually if a PhD student fails his/her defense, then they get a MA/MS as a consolation prize. (you can also pick one up along the way even if your going to pass your defense) Moreover, getting a masters before going for a PhD is not guaranteed to shorten the time by any means. |
