I live equi-distant (sp) to a Homever and an E-mart. Usually I go to Homever because E-mart is always buzzing like an ants' nest.

Today, however, I went off to E-mart to follow up rumours of Weetabix Minis in the cereal aisle. I found the said wheaty treats, albeit the chocolate variety, and baked beans for only 630 won a tin. Potatoes were still 1000 won for half a small one, but altogether it wasn't too bad and it got me wondering...What is the general consensus on the best source of food shopping for westerners in Korea? I'm sure we've seen this kind of thread before but I missed it. Share your views?

Home plus has improved alot in the past year or so. It is the best. I was at a Homever on Chirstmas, it was selling off all the left over stuff from being Caurffoure. Mostly the good foreign stuff.

Costco.
Find the nearest location near you in Seoul, Daejeon, and Daegu.

I finally checked out the new Homever. Bleck. They reduced selection and jacked up the prices. A loaf of store baked bread used to go for 900 won at Carrefour. The same loaf Emart charges 2000 won. Homever now charges 3000 won. All the good, inexpensive Carrefour store brands are gone and we just get the brand name stuff that all the other grocery stores in Korea seem to have agreed no one will sell below a fixed price.

Never been to Homever. But from my experience (Yongsan and Yeoksam branches,) Emart sucks.
Too many people. Too few products. Never again.

They are both totally useless. From a foreigners perspective. Lack of any western stuff and high prices all round. Homever was especially useless. I was actually astounded at how little imported stuff there was and how expensive those few things were.

Get to Costco or Homeplus. Best two supermarkets in Korea.

Yeah it seems all the Homevers are different. The one near me is great. Has most of the stuff Costco has, but in sizes that won't take up my entire cabinet or freezer.

As for Emart, it can be generally agreed upon that it sucks ass. Emart is the 1990s Kmart of Korea: depressing, and full of troglodytes.

Agreed.

Q, what type of sizes do they have for frozen stuff? Costco like size?

I didn't really check out the frozen selection that much, at Homever or Costco. Not very interested in frozen food. But what I mean is at Costco, everything is gigantic. Homever has a lot of the same stuff but in smaller sizes (though more expensive, pound for pound).

Emart for me, but only because I live opposite one.

The Homever at world cup stadium seemed good for products, but expensive and so packed full of people I actually shat myself.

Costco is the best place to shop in Korea...hands down. If they were to ever axe Costco like they did Walmart....I'd have to blow up the Blue House....I really would.
