Just got the preliminary results back from mothers regarding my own and two coworkers' teaching performance in the English immersion program we teach at a private elementary school. One of the comments was that some of us needed to lose weight. I'm thinking of responding that I'll start getting thinner when the mothers stop being so ugly, especially the one who looks like she pilfered her clothes and makeup from Boy George's dressing room. Is this fair comment?

How about them cooking healthy meals for you and petitioning for 2 hours off everyday to go to the gym. Also, if they could stop sending their children there, it would relieve a lot of stress which is usually associated with weight gain Wink

Pfft, that would require these people to learn the concept of negotiation. Having just discovered, during a painful contract renewal process, that they haven't the least understanding thereof, I don't think I'd bother. Telling them to kiss my black erse is so more satisfying.

OMG- that woman needs to get a life. That's totally inappropriate. Furthermore, I don't know if you had direct access to the comments, but it seems to me that the more clued-in schools would have filtered that comment out.

My first year in Korea, one of the teachers was nicknamed "Pig teacher". Even at the Xmas open house, he was introduced by the director as "Pig teacher", and the guy went up to the podium rubbing his belly, making a joke that he had just reached the 9 month mark. I'd say your average teacher (and average Korean, for that matter) would have been offended.

Meh.

Ha ha, I could be like homer in that episode of the simpsons and try to put on enough weight to go on disability.

Dr Nick: "Try eating more from the congealed group".

I am neither black nor do I resemble Nigel, it was just a metaphor. Anyhow, we apparently have some mutual friends, they can fill you in on what I look like, alternatively search thekimchipot for my pic.

Ok and how does possibly being a few pounds overweight effect your teaching skills?

Ask your director that.

Exactly, I could look like Gilbert Grape's momma and be the world's greatest teacher, or alternately look like twiggy and be complete and utter pants. I really want to open the thread to certain cultural notions of what is appropriate and what is not, but know I would cause a shiggin fritstorm if I did.

You would think that at a private school, where the majority of the children come from some of the more affluent families in the area, this wouldn't happen.

Well, if you were to lose weight, the parents would be happy, you'd feel better, girls would find you more attractive, your friends wouldn't laugh at you behind your back, etc.

Sounds like a win-win situation to me, what's the big deal? Aren't you tired of perpuating the stereotype that most Westerners are grotesque clunkers? Or do you just enjoy not being able to find clothes your size at 95% of the stores here?
