Save your money. It just isn't done, except in a few westernized restaurants where they screw you over with their required tip.
Back when I was a newbie, I frequented a bar and did my best not to drool on Ms. Choi, the owner and former model. On my third or fourth visit I felt I should leave a tip for the 'service' french fries and generally great service. I left a couple of thousand won and felt like a cheap-skate.
Got half a block down the street before she grabbed me (still my heart!) and returned the money.
Tiplessness is ONE of the GREAT advances of Korean culture over our western backward societies. Enjoy!! |

Invite the delivery guy in to watch the CGV channel with you.
(Then, if he falls asleep, cut out his kidney and sell it on the black market.) |

If you try to tip, it may be seen as an insult, or at the least a very awkward act. The only time I've ever tipped anyone was the guy who drove me from the airport and helped me carry two heavy suitcases, a travel-on, and a bass guitar all the way through the airport, then up to my apartment. I had to practically beg him to take it, too. |

Your western backward societies maybe, not mine. No tipping where I'm from. Never have been able to understand why I should have to pay someone extra just to get good service. That's their bloody job - if they can't or won't do it well to begin with, then find something else. Have a bit of pride in your work.
Here in Korea, I've had people chasing me down the street to return 100 won that I had inadvertently left in a locker. And on any occasion when I have wanted to show my appreciation for extra attention, it's been treated like a gross misunderstanding and finished with the money being returned to me and general embarrassment for all concerned. |

That's a rather massive generalisation.
Tipping isn't ingrained in every Western society. Certainly not in mine. |

I know that tipping is generally not done in Korea at restaurants, but what about pizza or other food delivery drivers? Can we tip them or should we, or is it somehow against the culture? Thanks! |
a tip in the shadows is fine |

Think Mr. Pink in the opening scene or Reservoir Dogs. |

I was told by several of my adult students that accepting tip is illegal in Korea. So, when you tip, you are soliciting illegal act.
It sounds very ridiculous, but they swore it is true. |

Tipping is wrong.
One of the worst aspects of living in Canada or the U.S. is the need to tip for something you've already paid for. |
