Hey,

Due to my mother's enquiries, I'm thinking of 'asking for' an Ipod Nano for Christmas. I know, I know...I'm 27 years old and yet, my parents still insist on giving me a 'big gift' every Christmas. Who am I to go against tradition?

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you own one? If so, what do you like/dislike about it? Are they really any better than an mp3 player? I can't see myself needing any more than 2 Gb.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

LW

I bought an IPOD Nano, in Hong Kong, for my girlfriend. She loves it and she never forgets to take it anywhere. It is just as good or better than any MP3 player, but I would rather just get something that can play videos.

The Nano has very good battery life. But for me the biggest drawback is that you need iTunes to load songs on, and you cant plug it into a friends computer and load songs on, and it is not easy to get songs off.

The whole Ipod phenomenon is incredible. I bought one of the latest models (30Gb video) and whilst it's not bad, I don't think they're as amazing as many people like to claim. Poor battery life, crappy bass reproduction and limited video capability (only plays MP4) are amongst some of my complaints.
On the plus side, I-Tunes is a sinch to use when uploading stuff.

If you format your iPod with the PC version of iTunes, your (friend's) Mac will be able to read it. iTunes is free off the net for Mac or PC.

Get new headphones. I got the in-ear ones that fold up to store and the bass is great.

I bought an Ipod Nano G2/4 GB a few weeks ago. I got it for $200, 2 skins, and a neck-chain (sold seperately).

It already locked on me once..the Iphoto feature is great, the music quality I think is, quality. But I read that the internal battery only lasts about a year before you have to get it replaced, which I also read was almost equal to purchasing a new Ipod. By then, Apple possibly will have already made a new Ipod.

I like being able to organize my music w/ the Ipod and I also along w/ other Nano'ers bring it everywhere I go (e.g. gym, work, etc.).

So far it's exceeded my standards, which all I wanted initially was a sufficient amount of GB to store my fav. tunes.

All in all, I figured all I need is something small, compact, convenient, and easily-accessible for my traveling adventures. But if after a year, give or take a few months, and it dies out on me, which it eventually will, I'll regret not purchasing an mp3 player that runs on replaceable batteries..

A couple of clarifications:

If you format your iPod with Mac iTunes, then want to make it work with Windows iTunes, you will have to format it again, which erases the music on the iPod. You can, of course, download it again from you computer, but you can't format it at your friends house and expect it to read. [This is the way it used to be, less than a year ago. Someone correct me if it's changed.]

You CAN copy songs from the iPod to someone else's iTunes (given the fact you both have Mac iTunes or Windows iTunes), you just need to download 3rd party software. Google "iPod to PC" and variations, you'll find what you are looking for.

My iPod Nano is slightly less than a year old and has 10 hours of battery life. I haven't noticed a drop as time goes on, but I haven't been keeping notes or anything. I hear the new generation of iPods that were supposed to be out this Christmas may have up to 24 hours of battery life. I haven't researched it lately.

Be careful about buying a Zune. It's brand new and you should check the user reviews. cnet.com is a great place to do that.

My Gen2 Ipod Nano lasts about 24 hours on a full battery, although fiddling around with it every 2 seconds will drain the sucker like crazy.

The setup menu allows you to fool around w/ backlighting, LCD, etc.

Almost a year w/ your Nano eh? What Generation is it? Let me know when it completely crashes on ya..

I bought the 1st Gen. 4gb Nano when it came right out of the factory. At that time, it was teh prettiest and the smallest MP3 player on the market. I liked it alot. The battery life was at least 14 hrs on a full charge and i did play it nonstop for that time, until i needed recharging.

iTunes is a pain to use and a huge disadvantage about the ipod is transferring music, as all of you already know.

sound quality was great, but only after i purchased the in-ear style Sony MDR-71LP (i think that's the model), all of my friends who tried those headphones were truly amazed and bought themselves some.

back to the nano: i cracked the screen only 6 months later (my own fault, it was on a hotel bed and things happen in the dark) but was able to use the nano as normal since i was familiar with the menu. the place of purchase told me it wasnt covered under apple's nor their 'extended' warranty that they sold me, and replacing a cracked screen would exceed almost 75% of the value of a new nano. so i learned to live with the crack.

however, after arriving in korea, it suddenly stopped working after 2 months, even after resetting it a few times, my computer was unable to read or detect it. so i just junked it.

I replaced the nano wiht a 1 gb generic MP3 player that is smaller than the size of a matchbox and much more convenient than the nano.

what i liked most about apple are the cool accessories etc. but iTunes is a real bummer and the many user restrictions.

kigolo, what type of iTunes restrictions are you talking about? I find iTunes very simple to use.

My problem is that you can't take another person's music off their iPod and put it on your computer. This is fixed with 3rd party software.

My other problem is that I can't have 2 accounts: one for my laptop, and one for my external hard drive. This is fixed with 3rd party software, now I choose which account to open.
