I'm curious, I listened to the Koreans in the English department discussing me during our meeting today. 10-12-10. They said it was a teacher evalutaion score, but didn't want to talk about with me.
Does anybody know if there is a standard system, and if so, what do those scores represent?

Thanks.

my understanding is that there has been a recent proposal by the government for evaluations, but the teachers' union has balked at it.

i heard that EPIK teacher were undergoing an eval, but it doesn't apply to korean teachers.

there's an interesting article here about the public school debate:

I'd love to see what my score would be, considering they all tell me different things and try to pull me in opposing directions heh.

I think the only relevance it could have is if you were truly awful and /or they didn't want to renew someone's contract nor offer a raise.

In which case, well, there are other jobs. However,it's invariably easier for them to keep the present teacher. They don't want the extra work and expense of using a recruiter, interviewing, wondering what the new teacher is going to be like etc.

Nothing is standard in Korea. Even in public schools, things can differ from district to district, school to school, teacher to teacher and day to day.

So do you know what the rating system is? Did I get 10 out 15? Out of 20? I hope not out of more than that....

Oh, and that's just mean... Laughing

The thread is about TEACHER evaluations, not students.

I want more than that though. I'm an alpha in almost everything I do. Every day I want to be a better teacher today than yesterday. I want to be a better teacher than the one beside me, so I strive for that....I am not content to just get rehired. Someday I want to be remembered by my students as the best teacher they ever had. That's all I want.

Why? Nobody outside of Korea is going to care what some Korean administrator wrote in an evaluation (unless you end up working for the British Council in Seoul or a proper international school).

The best thing to do is to get two (or better yet three) evaluations written from people who have internationally accepted credentials (i.e. DELTA, MA, PhD.) in TESL or Applied Linguistics and use those in your C.V.

Just consider yourself fortunate you are appreciated at your school (at least from what you have posted, it seems that way) as most foreign teachers in Korea don't even have the satisfaction of that.

BTW, do you really think Korean teachers are even qualified to evaluate you? Would they be able to teach ESL anywhere outside of Korea? No. No.

How much your students learn, or how they regard you isn't going to be related to paperwork generated by a Korean administrator.

Ah, my response wasn't saying I wanted a better evaluation. It was in repsonse to the suggestion that I do the minimum cause unless I was a true f-up, I wouldnt get fired.
"Show up to work don't miss classes and don't be stupid and you will have no probs." This is not enough for me. I agree with what you said though.
