So, who has been to Japan and would like to bestow some of their wisdom. I've got five days. What's on the list of things that I have got to do while I'm there, or shoot myself in despair.
Any helpful travel hints?
I got some helpful advice in the thread about rail travel, so I thought I would ask. cheers. |

Where are you landing...
I am imagining either tokyo or osaka..
basically in 5 days you can work from one city to the other and with the JR pass you can go however you want...
Places to hit up would include
Tokyo - big city
Mt. Fuji
Osaka -2nd biggest city(3 hours from tokyo on the bullet train)
Kyoto - old capital
Nara - REALLY old capital
Hiroshima - bomb site and floating Torii
Himeji - best original castle in japan
This is super basic and would leave only maybe a day in Tokyo but this is what i would be looking at over 5 days |

I think this is all together too ambitious for 5 days. I would just visit Tokyo, Nikko, and Mt. Fuji and plan on another (longer) trip for Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, and perhaps Hiroshima and Osaka. Nikko is good for one day, Mt. Fuji will take half a day, and there is no shortage of things to do in Tokyo. Try to see a performance one evening. |

You could also do a daytrip to Kamakura from Tokyo, or Tokyo to Hakone to see Mt Fuji, (but avoid weekends when it's supercrowded).
Tokyo City View in Mori Tower, Roppongi (Tokyo), is also worth a visit.
5 days is too short. I had 9 days & managed Busan > Fukuoka > Nagasaki > Hiroshima > Kyoto > Fuji Yoshida > Kamakura > Tokyo > Miyajima > Fukuoka > Busan nearly all with a JR pass using the Hikari series trains. I wasted a day getting to Fuji Yoshida from Shin Fuji. Hakone would be a better choice on a weekday to view Mt Fuji & save time. |

Yep it is very tough...I wouldn't do it all(I did it in 8 days)in 5 days, especially if you have to loop back to Tokyo but I started in Tokyo and ended in Fukuoka so it was pretty easy....
Just pointing out some of the highlights |
