We are a little short of students at the moment, with no one teacher losing any more students that the other, but it's seems that I have appeared in the crosshairs.
I had a swift look at January's schedule. Due to mergers and class simply being re-allocated, I have ONE class and day in Jan, while my colleagues have 5 or 6.
My boss assures me that my job is safe, but I'd be pretty naive to believe, don't you think. So, if she's being dishonest about this, is she gonna screw me over completely. |

Being fired in Korea is a blessing. It means you can go out and find a better job with no strings attached. You can have a new one within a week.
Keep some cash on hand in case it happens. |

January's schedule is already out? But wait its not 5 mintues past class time on January 2. Why would they have the schedule done already? How could that be?!?
Ok, now seriously, I would be getting that resume spruced up. It seems a little sketchy. Are serious schedule overhauls common at your school? Are they planning on asking you to make curriculum or something? That seem like theo nly plausible explanation. |

Being fired or laid-off without notice or on short notice is something that Hakwons seem to do indifferently.
I was working at a great place for 2 and half years and a month after I renewed my visa to work there, they gave me notice they were going to close.
Before agreeing or disagreeing with what I am going to say, you should check into the labor laws first.
Because I think that if you get laid off (not fired), your boss is obliged to give you severance pay because the damage is not totally done by you.
From what I remember, if an employee is laid-off for financial difficulties, the boss has to pay the severance payment upon date of termination.
Like you, he also has to abide by the contract.
And if you decide not to look for another job while in Korea, the boss is also obligated by labor law to pay for your ticket back to your home country as well.
This is standard practice for the foreign industrial trainees coming and going from Korea.
PLEASE! Don't quote me on it, find it in the labor laws first before taking my words to heart.... |

Not neccessarily, if your boss doesn't give you a 'Letter of Release' or personally go into immigration (neither of which he has to do) then you won't be able to get another job until your currnet E-2 visa expires.
Getting fired does give you more options with the Labor board though. If he doesn't give you 30 days notice you are still entitled to another months salary which the Labor Board will get for you and if he rips you off for any monies owed they'll fight for that too. |

Oh, also, don't fall for this one. You only worked 60 hours instead of 120, so we're only going to pay you 50%. I had my boss try and pull that carp last year. Even if they only sign you up for one hours a month, as long as you are available to do the work, they have to pay you for the full month as stipulated in the contract. |

PM me for a new and, I'm sure, better paying and more interesting teaching position within three weeks.

Ride it our maddog...if they try any funny business with your salary, get on the phone with labor or consult one of the ESL law gurus on the 'Net.
I think getting fired is like winning the lotto here....you can always win if you know what to do and where you look for better work and better times. |

I was under the impression that getting fired meant that your visa is canceled and you don't need a LOR.
Can we get a ruling on this? |

That's why I get paid every week. If the numbers start dropping then I can leave before they can try to fire me without paying. |

Are you married to a local woman?
You deserve kudos for getting paid on a weekly basis. |

New school, few students, gaining everyday week so they can't afford to lose me. They had a Canadian/Russian student before me (totally illegal) and here comes me with my three years experience. They don't want to face the other option. They tried not paying me every week after the first 3 weeks but I told them to stick it and that I would go through the labour courts and they apoligised and paid me straight away. Fecker had the money already with my receipt in his pocket but thought that he would try me anyway. Guess who won that round. |

If they can you they owe you severance (pro-rated of course so it won't be the full amount for a 12 month contract completed). |
