Although I realize the following two areas would not appeal to a lot of people, I am interested in the these two areas: Masan and Miryang
I've read quite a bit about Masan, but few people have remarked on Miryang.
Any comments/advice?
I will be teaching in a public school. Masan pays more, but I like the appeal Miryang has in the way of outdoor activities (hiking/fishing). |

I have never been to either place, but from what I understand, and you must too, Masan is a big town or small city with a considerable population, I dunno, up to 3 or 4 hundred thou , near bigger cities.
Miryang is small. You will be alone in the sticks there with hopefully one or maybe a few pals, not far from comfort perhaps... could be trying though.. |

I've been to both.
Masan, Changwon and Jinhae are really one big city (about 1 million total), that is divided by a mountain. Masan is the oldest part and is on a bay. It has an industrial section. Changwon is a new, planned city, with means it has straight streets and parks. Masan had a Wal-Mart until it was bought out by someone. Changwon has E-Mart and HomePlus. Both have big movie complexes. Jinhae is through the tunnel and is quite pretty. It has a major cherry blossom festival the first week of April. The city exists to serve the Korean navy.
Miryang is a small city. Sorry, I don't remember how small. (50,000-100,000???) It's on the railroad line, so getting to Busan is easy. If I remember right, Busan is less than 1/2 hour away. (It also has the regular bus service.) Don't know about the shopping. Miryang is famous as the home of a major high school sex scandal.
If you think you want to meet other foreigners, there will be more of them in Masan/Changwon. Shopping will be better there, too. If you want a more rural experience, Miryang is the way to go.
You mentioned outdoor activities: Both places are very close to each other. Opportunities would be about equal, I'd say. |
