I saw this on www.fandeth.com and had to laugh.

I really thought the Chinese were the only people who actively ate the dog...

Is Dog Meat Healthy?

For the purpose of this page, I am not debating whether eating little Sparky is a barbarian act or not. My focus is questioning the health benefits of eating dog meat.

Background Info About Eating Dogs in Korea

As you may already know, they eat dogs in Korea. The vast majority of Koreans do not eat dogs, but the older generation tends to continue the practice.

Most dogs are eaten in a soupy stew called 'boshintang' which literally means soup that builds up the body.

Reasons to Eat Dogs

Ask a Korean why they might eat dog meat, they will state that it is for their health. I do not deny that dog meat may have health benefits, but I doubt that the benefits are more than other forms of meat.

Here is a list of benefits of eating dog meat:

Improving virility
Improving women's skin
Somehow a cure for summer heat
It is recommended if you suffer from an illness
It is recommended if you are recovering from an illness

Arguments Against the Health Benefits of Dog Meat

Most of the arguments against eating do meat come from anti-dog eating activists. So, I think, we have to consider the source when making our judgements.

Here are a few interesting points I came across in my research:

According to Sunnan Kum (article below), "the consumption of dog meat actually increases the chance of developing cancer".

According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (article below), "There is no scientific evidence that dog meat has restorative or curative powers; these health claims are folklore not fact.

Dog eating "grew in popularity after reconstruction because dog dealers and restaurants began to fabricate health benefits derived from eating dog meat. In reality, the trade in dog meat has more to do with greed and profits rather than any sort of tradition." - Korean Animals

Just a Thought

When they kill the dog, it is best to hang the dog from a tree and beat it to death to properly tenderize the meat. I wonder why nobody cares about the dog living in a cage without freedom to run or how that would impact the quality of the meat.

I have to say that I find the sanctity of the dog's life somewhat irrational. Pigs are more intelligent, and many have no problems eating them jews and muslims excepted. personally I don't eat anything mammalian.

I eat seafood of all sorts and once in a while I cave in to my cravings for chicken.

Frankly, I think passive eating (intravenous?) sounds worse.

Dog tastes good. I don't know why people here always seem so narrow minded about it. If it doesn't have a name and it isn't my dog...then it is for eating. People are weird about things like this.
