I have to help think of ideas for an English festival that will be held at my middle school later this month, but since I've never been to one before and I'm a relatively inexperienced teacher, I'm short of ideas. So far, I can only think of karaoke and a version of the TV show in which a person has to guess the word that the students are describing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

How about a reproduction of Glastonbury Festival, replete with tents, mud and three days of pop bands playing?

Sports are great, of course, but they have to be seen to be learning English at the same time!

Go with things that Koreans are already familiar with. Ask the English teachers or top students to explain to you what a 'Golden Bell' quiz and Korean version of a 'speed quiz' are. Get a bunch of white boards and marker pens and go at it.

You could also try an English photo-scavenger hunt. Everyone will have a camera or handphone with a camera. Put people in teams and give them lists of items in English around the school they have to photograph.

I've done the quiz thing before, but I really like the idea of a scavenger hunt. I could make it into something resembling a treasure hunt. Thanks for that.

Oh, an English language festival. I got a bit excited there for a moment.

I really don't know who your festival is aimed at, presumably its just for the students, but something I've always wanted to do is a version of the reality TV show 'The Amazing Race'.

Students are put into teams of mixed abilities and they have to go from one place to the next, and they only know the location of the next activity by solving something connected with English... solving grammatical mistakes, a reading comprehension, whatever. They proceed from one activity to the next until there is a winner.

In a similar vein is where teams run a relay race from one place back where they get an incorrect sentence in English to their team where the team need to correct the sentence and show it to you before they can get the next one.

You could have a public speaking contest, a debating contest stuff like that, hope that's useful.

What about Jeopardy? Do you have a computer attached to a big screen you could use?

I think this could work great! Maybe you could have a preliminary round during the main part of the festival to pick the top three performers, and then have them perform in a final with the whole school judging (at some point they will all be assembled) by applause who the winner is.

Soldiers and Ninjas:
I thought I would try this game at a festival http://genkienglish.net/soldiersninjas.htm however, it turned out I did not have to do anything but walk around, eat snacks and watch the kids play sports. It seems like it would work best if you tried it with one class first, and then arrange it so that a lot of members of that class could be around when you start the game to act as a model for others.
