I saw one once with three shifts. 6:30 - 7:30, 12:00 - 3:00 and 7:00 - 11:00. How do they get people to do these things. I saw a job ad for Japan that offered the normal 250000 a month, no rent help at all, no bonus, and you work 6 days a week plus 3 sundays a term will have to be worked too. |

| jajdude, are you left handed? I've never seen a hangman drawn to the left. If you drew it, I would guess you are left handed. |

Nah, my friend found that somewhere and put it there for me. I don't know how to do avatars or photos in posts. I've given up and remain complacent in my lack of computer savvy.

*shakes head* I am not, not American. Interesting... how could I go so far in life without seeing a left sided hangman?

Jajdude - My schedule is very similar to the one you mentioned, but I don't find it as terrible as everyone on the board has lead us to believe.
First of all, ending at 9 p.m. and beginning at 7 gives you the chance to have 8 hours if you really need it, and a big nap in the afternoon.
My apt. is big and really close to the school, so I just walk 5 mins. and come straight back, hang out, have a Korean Lesson, go to the gym followed by an afternoon nap.
The plus is that I teach adults, the same class/level all day with minimal prep - it's by far the easiest job I've had and the only drawback is the hours. I think if you're close enough to your home they can be O.K. , and I really am glad I decided not to teach kids again.
That being said, most people leave after one year because of the schedule |

| I worked split-shifts for a YBM ELS for two months (ELS Chongno doesn't make you do more than three months of splits) and by the end of the second month of 7-10am/7-10pm splits I came very close to losing my mind. Then I was put on a 7am-1pm block schedule and all became right with the world. |

| These hours for just two million won? They better be offering free beer and hookers to pad that out. |

Who would take a kind of job like that? The worst of both worlds. Early mornings and late nights. You can't even go out after work because you have to get up so early. You can't go out in the early evening either for supper or something because you're working. That's a nightmare.
However, I will say the smaller splits aren't so bad. Say kindi from 10-12:30 or something and then elementary from 3:00-6:30 or something like that. A nice chunk in the day to go to the gym or do your errands or have a quick nap or whatever. Assuming of course that you live close by work. |

These hours are fairly typical for an adult hogwon. In fact, for an adult hogwon, they're relatively good.
When I worked at one most of us started at 7am and finished at 10pm every night. If we were lucky we had an uninterrupted break of 6-8 hours in the middle of the day, but all too often we'd have a class or two or level testing in the middle of the day to muck even that up.
Who would work hours like that? Someone who really wanted to teach adults instead of kids, that's who.
Anyway, the money was better than teaching kids and the experience helped me land a uni job. I'm glad I did it. I'm even more glad I'm doing something else now, something else which still is not teaching kids.
But "split shifts are great"? You almost have to admire the chutzpah of the person who wrote that ad, trying to pass off that kind of horrible schedule as a selling point. |

If you read the ad, it says there are adults, elementary, and middle school students..... so you get the joy of a split shift + the joy of still teaching kids . What's not to love? |
