HI everyone. I posted a search for Haman and out came a ton of non related stuff, so excuse me if this has been discussed before.

After about 18 hours of posting my cv to a couple of recruiters, I got a possible offer working in Haman, and part of the job description reads
"JOB DESCRIPTION
Primarily, successful applicants will be required to conduct English conversation classes at the assigned school. Successful applicants will also be required to teach Korean English teachers different aspects of ESL methodology or language acquisition, which entails the introduction of useful or new methods of using games or other forms of interaction to stimulated a communicative classroom learning environment.
"

Now I teach Korean kids in Thailand and they are of all ages. But I have never taught ESL to Korean English teachers.

1. Haman. How is the place? Anyone live there?
2. Teaching teachers. I would not know where to begin. Conversation, ppp?

Will post contract once I get it... but the jist of it is:

- starting date: January 1st, 2007
- salary: 2.1~2.5 Korean won per month (depends on Qualification)
- working hours: 8:30 AM ~ 4:30 PM
- teaching hours: less than 100 hours per month
- 300,000 won settlement pay upon teachers arrival
- Round trip airfare (one way reimbursed upon teachers arrival and the other will be paid when you complete your contract)
- 100% severance pay
- 14 working days paid vacation a year + all Korean national holidays
- 50% medical insurance, 50% national pension plan supported
- Full furnished single housing or housing allowance (300,000won per month)

and between 2.1 and 2.5 mill.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I don't like the sound of that. It sounds like rather than being a school's native teacher, you would be an agency's native teacher to get shipped around. However, I could be wrong.

From the hours it sounds like you'd be working at a middle school. It could be an elementary school where you have to do some after-school lessons or a lot of after-school ass-sitting.

I would have a tonne of questions for the recruiter. First and foremost would be which school I'd be working at. If he can't name one particular school, tell him no thanks.

Then, I'd want to contact the English teachers at that particular school and ask them what you'd be doing, if there was a previous native teacher and if you could talk to him, whether your lessons would be graded or non-graded, what the class sizes are like, etc.

Don't go with this recruiter unless he can answer a lot of detailed questions.

Thanks a million. Any other questions I should ask, please let me know. I will email her later today. I have a short list gathered from everyone. But the two you mentioned did not occurr to me.
Tks!!

Yes - it makes a huge difference whether your working for a school or for an agency that hires out to schools, often many different schools where you're not so much a teacher as a guest speaker.

It also makes a big difference if there has been a native speaker at the school before. If there hasn't it's probably better. The previous teacher may have set the bar way too low or impossibly high for you. If there has been a FT there before and they won't let you get in touch with him / her, that should also raise a red flag.

Just to update.
I will work for the school board. But due to one other school being rural, I will have to commute to that school. No idea if it is daily or how often per week.

I have the email address of the other foreign teacher there and am waiting for his reply.

DO NOT GO TO HAMAN.

The Education director will try to renege on the contract terms again and again and you will find you have a constant battle on your hands. The individual schools may be OK but they don't have the final say in contract issues.

Not only has this education board reneged on my contract but they have made life very difficult for other friends in Haman. My advice would be DO NOT GO THERE UNTIL THEY HAVE A NEW DIRECTOR.

Yeah, I was offered a job in Haman last spring. I turned it down b/c the recruiter was really shady. First I was offered 1.8 million to teach in a high school, and I said no. Then she turned around and offered me 2.3 for the same job, and then she said I'd have to work in the middle school.
