I stupidly lost essentially every piece of id I had this weekend, including my passport and my apartment keys. To keep a long and depressing story short, I'm going to wait a week in hope before officially cancelling my passport because it's such a hassel to get a new one issued, especially with all my i.d gone.

I keep getting the runaround about replacing my work visa once I get a new passport. Do I need to go on another visa run? Is my work visa linked to my passport in a way that it can't be replaced in Korea? The main branch of my large chain school told me that I will need to go on a visa run, but the Canadian embassy said I wouldn't. Does anyone actually know?

When you say "visa" I think you mean your alien registration card, right? If that's the case, I believe that immigration can issue you another one. However, I heard that they require a lost/stolen report from a cop shop. I'd get your boss to call immi and find out what's necessary.

If you have photocopies of your lost passport info pages and the actual visa, it might make things easier, but they should have that info on file at the office(and your workplace).

No, I mean I stupidly lost my actual work visa, as it was inside my now lost passport, along with my ARC and my subway pass, and my Canadian ids, and my apartment keys, and hopefully not my entire identity.

If my passport doesn't show up, I will need to replace it, so I'm wondering if that will void my work visa and if I'll have to go on another visa run.

As I said, get immigration to issue you a new alien registration card. Your visa is still on file at the immi office. When you get the new passport, bring it in to the immigration office so they'll have a photocopy of that on file, too.

I've heard from the school that I can't get a new ARC until I have a new passport. It's such a vicious cycle.

Ask you boss to ask immi about bringing in a lost/stolen report from a police station. If they refuse to allow that, I guess you can just go and work for about two weeks without any sort of identification until you get your new passport. It wouldn't(would) be very amusing if you were to be deported when you actually are working legally.

I got a police report yesterday, so I'll ask my school today to call immigration and ask about the ARC. Thanks for the info.

If you have the police report, go to immigration and get a replacement ARC. IT will cost you 10k won and you will have to fill in an application paper. No worry mate.

Next you will have to send home and get a replacement birth certificate and SIN card (and drivers licence if you still hold residency).

Once you have those you can go to the embassy and get a replacement passport. You will need (if you or your boss still have) a copy of your old passport, your Canadian birth certificate / citizenship documents, and 2 other pieces of government ID. Your SIN and your ARC will suffice here.

It will take about 2-3 weeks for your passport to arrive after your application.

NOW you go BACK to immigration and register your new passport. They will transfer your "visa", re-entry permit if you have one and anything else that is important to you. This takes about 30 minutes (after you get to the counter).

The CANADIAN embassy will be the biggest pain in the axx and most useless piece of *beep* that you will have to deal with in the whole process. The rest will be easy.

Thank you so much for the help. Passport Canada said to give it a week before officially cancelling my passport, so I'm going to anxiously wait and then take your advice.

Hate to ressurrect this old thread, but I just found out that I might not get paid this week after being in Korea since the end of October, because I don't have proper id to reopen my bank account.

I was waiting on my birth certificate from home and my school to apply for a new passport, which I'll be doing this week. The school called immigration to confirm that I wouldn't need a new visa and they said I would need to get a new passport before they'd reissue my ARC, which I obviously need for the bank. I've read here that a police report will suffice, but my school was on the phone with immigration for ten minutes trying to sort it out. Immigration is a long way from my place, especially considering I need to work in the afternoon.

Should I try to go to immigration, despite the school's and immigration's advice? I'd really like to get my paycheque for Christmas. It won't be much of a holiday on cash advances without a passport either. Can anyone confirm that they went into Immigration with a police report, and maybe a photocopy of their old ARC, and got one by filling out the form and paying the fee?

Social Insurance Number... to Americans it would be the same as SSN.

Why don't they pay you in cash or by cheque?I am not sure if I would trust a school that withholds my first paycheque because I don't have a bank account.

Right on dude.

They shouldn't withhold your pay. They should make every effort to pay you including paying you in cash. All they have to do is make up a receipt with all the deductions and have you sign for the cash.

If they don't, there's something wrong with them. I wouldn't want to work for them as soon as I get all my documents straight.

I work for a chain school and all our paycheques come from head office. It's difficult for the school to give us more than 500k in cash for some reason. They've discussed depositing the money directly into my Canadian account, so it's not a matter of they just don't want to pay me. I just want access to my money for vacation, so I need to know if I can get an ARC for sure without a passport.
