I have heard a few stories about new teachers arriving in Korea and then being left stranded by their supposed employers at the airport because they were not up to standard physically (read; overweight or ugly).

I've been in Korea for a decent amount of time now and I'm still intrigued/ mystified/ bewildered about this urban legend. One of my friends told me he knew it happened at his school but I still couldn't believe anybody would be that shallow. I know this is Korea but still................

If anyone has any stories about their friends or coworkers getting left at the airport, then I would love to hear them. Even if you got stung, it would be great if you were brave and posted up.

This is why you make them prepay your ticket. If they have $1k or more invested in you already you can be assured that you won't get left at the airport.

If you don't have your E2 and you were hoping for reimbursement on arrival you can expect that you may be abandoned if you do not meet their visual expectation.

I have worked with 2 people who were in this predicament.

I knew a guy and his new wife that were abandoned shortly after arriving because of his lazy eye. It was sad. They even got the welcome dinner before they got the boot...I guess they were lucky compared to what you guys are talking about.

Or black.

(we all know the problems many blacks have of getting jobs here)

I know this isn't the focus of the topic, but on the subjects of blacks, one of my coworkers is from South Africa (She's of a mixed background, so she appears to be white but has black background) was actually told by our director that she almost wasn't hired, because when the school saw "South Africa" on her application, the school thought she was dark skinned. When my coworker sent all the necessary paperwork, I guess the school was fine with hiring her.
Amazes me just how open the Korean's are with their biogotry.

I knew a school who hired someone from South Africa...

The director saw her come through the gate but she was half indian/black and he just turned around and walked away...

I am not making that up...when he was asked where the new teacher was he said she is too dark so I left her at the airport.

Someone else went and picked her up(after who knows how long and where from) but i am pretty sure she didn't stay too long after that the poor girl.....

Does this kind of thing happen with public school jobs or just with Hagwons?

It sometimes happens the other way round as well.

This is 'Just Because's' story but I'll tell it anyway.

He was flying back from Japan and was the only foreigner on the flight and when he arrived at Incheon airport a Korean guy came up to him and asked if he was so and so. JB said no sorry mate that's not me. So the guy asked him if he saw any other foreigners on the plane , JB said no. So the guy then says that you must be so and so. JB tells him in Korean that he has lived here for 5 years and that he is not the person this guy was looking for.

Turns out that the foreigner had a flight that did a stop over in Japan and never took the extra leg to Korea. Who ever it was had riped off this Korean guy for a free flight to Japan and just dissapeared.

Only with Hagwons. That thread about Hagwons being better than publilc schools needs to be bumped up again.

Absolutely. Plenty of foreigners have taken the free ride to Korea then just "disappeared".
