If it's a good product for a decent price, I'd buy it even though evil Micro$oft makes it.

Many iPod Owners Will Buy Zune

A new survey conducted by ABI Research has shown that many prospective MP3 player buyers—even owners of iPods—would be likely to choose Microsoft's Zune player. 1725 teenage and adult US residents were asked whether they planned to buy an MP3 player in the next 12 months. Of those responding that they were likely to do so, 58% of those identifying themselves as existing iPod owners and 59% of those who owned other brands said they would be "somewhat likely" or "extremely likely" to choose a Microsoft Zune player over an iPod or another brand of MP3 player.

"..iPod users don't display the same passionate loyalty to iPods that Macintosh users have historically shown for their Apple products."

I always had decent alternatives to ipod, unlikely that I will get excited over this Microsft trinket. When Sandisk makes a cheaper knock off, that'll be the time to buy.

There are a couple of problems with the Zune for me. It requires software to load your songs on, just like the iPod. I dont want that. It wont act as a portable hard drive either.

I have an iPod but use alternate firmware (free opensource) from rockbox.org that allows me to drag and drop music on and off, customise the interface and tons of other stuff.

This means if I come to your place I can give you all my music, and "borrow" yours.

Every mp player I've had (on my 5th since '9Cool does this, it's always been a primary requirement for me (along with an easily rechargeable/removable/replaceable battery). A little sorry to hear that Zune won't do this, but not really of any personal consequence for me.

Not sure it works with the 2nd edition Nanos yet. But with the first edition it adds video playback, though not with sound as yet. It is still a work in progress.

I asked this question about 2 months ago and got no replys. I guess I was just a tad too early. I myself won't get one, but no big surprise there. I've been using an iPod now for almost 2 years and it's great. Zune does have a couple of nice features I wouldn't mind seeing on the iPod though. Mainly as was shown in the picture above, the customizable background and such. I'm not really interested in the bigger screen since I don't really use the video play-back to watch much. A video podcast or something is about it. It eats too much juice. It works great and I've no reason to switch to something else. It goes with me everywhere. I'm more likely to forget my wallet then my iPod.

If you use Rockbox you can easily customise your iPod. See these screenshots....

bagging microsoft is awesome. all the cool kids are doing it. and the $ for the S is fantastic ... so symbolic and 'in your face'. Wink

seriously, if it's a good product what does it matter who made it? bill gates gives more money to charity than many countries. so that's a good thing.

i admit that some microsoft products are crap. windows is a bloated operating system. but microsoft also makes some good products.

the zune has been released and i'm not impressed with the features they've included. it seems that they've crippled the zune's abilities, rather than making it feature rich.

microsoft are no more evil than sony or apple ...

honestly, the best benefit of the zune is the competition. ipod is a piece of crap (i do own one) but it's a terribly thought out idea. battery life is terrible, uploading via the proprietary connection sucks, few ways to modify it. people are just gaga over the damn thing.

if zune makes the market more competitive and the products better, then that's best for us.

I totally love the fact that the editors, gods they are really, of engadget.com pretty much laid gigantic steaming human turds on both iPod and Zune in their podcast review. Yeah, they did. They said if they had their druthers, they'd buy a .... guess what... this.
