What if I tutor and not ask for payment. Client is free to give donation. What can immigration say about that? Any ideas? Is giving private spanish lessons also illegal?  |

immigration wouldn't care - they'd still bust you for it. just do it and don't get caught. |

I knew some teachers in Mapo-dong who were asked by their boss if they could volunteer a couple of hours every Saturday to teach English to children at an orphanage. They said yes, and the boss called immigration to get the ok but was told that, even though it was volunteer work, the teachers were stll seen as working illegally and would be punished according to the law if caught.  |

You gotta be ******* me. Told by who? The immigration?
So when you're having dinner with any Korean, you can be busted for allegedly teaching English?

Really, then why don't they bust the many soldiers and missionaries that do it openly? |

Soldiers are protected by SOFA agreement and missionaries are protected by GOD.  |

The soldiers and missionaries are on completely different visas are have a completely different set of rules. Yes it is still illegal for them to do it but a whole lot more hassle to bust them for it. If immigration tried to bust a soldier for doing there would be so much paperwork dealing with the military that it's just not worth it from immigrations point of view and on the rare occassion it has happened that I know of, iimigration has just notified the miltitary and left it up to them to deal with their own people and disciplinary measures.
As for missionaries (I have no experience with them) I guess immigration just turns a blind eye probably because they are here to try and help people who really need it. |

Yes- by immigration. Just be careful- they can get mad/stupid if they choose. |
