I recently downloaded the new bit torrent downloader and it sux, it chews up 3/4 of my ram. Whats going on? Is there a better downloader out there that I can use that won't slow my computer like this.

Thnx

www.utorrent.com

Uses about 6-10MB of ram, less if minimized. It's probably the most popular client in the world at the moment.

I had it too. Bittorrent was using 200+MB. Restarted and it went back to 10 MB. Oh, I now see it uses 37 MB?! I'm not sure what's going on and don't know if I'll keep it. Have to search a bit for possible answers.

I used Azareus for years. Tried uTorrent a month or so ago and haven't looked back since.

Just thought I'd throw this up here. I'm not sure if it is still in effect, but if you have Windows SP2, there is a limit on the number of TCP connections your computer can make per second, which can really slow down bit torrent. In any case, run the following program, and set the number anywhere from 50-100 and you should see a drastic increase in your bit torrent speeds.

http://www.lvllord.de/download.php?url=en/EvID4226Patch223d-en.zip

Just some anecdotal evidence of how well this works. Before the patch, my highest single sustained connection speed was around 300KB/s (which was rare, and also nowhere near my download capacity.) After the patch, on a well seeded torrent, I've gotten as high as 2.1MB/s (not rare at all to get in the hundreds of KB on many torrents now.)

Edit: Those speeds are on public trackers also, fyi.

My story too.

I found Azeureus rarely closed down cleanly then would have to do a lengthy re-hash when you next started it up, making the computer almost unusable for 20 minutes until it finished.

uTorrent does just want you want a BT client to do. Never a problem.

I see that I only have an upload speed of 40Kb/s. That's a bit low isn't it? How do I increase it? (I'm downloading at 150kb or so)

I downloaded: Event ID 4226 Patcher
as suggested somewhere else here on the forum, but it doesn't seem to do much.

From what I know, that patch shouldn't have any affect on your download speeds. It merely increase the speed at which you can connect to others.

One program that is very useful for people with limited upload/download speeds (not the 8MB/s guys) is cfosspeed.

http://www.cfos.de/speed/cfosspeed_e.htm

This allows you to uncap your upload/download speeds yet still surf the internet without any slowdown.

Used Bittorent exclusively, until I read that they're going legit. So I downloaded Azureus, and it works like a charm. I still use the Bittorent software, but only for small files, and only about 10 at a time.

I don't know why it was in Korean, I linked the English version.

However, I just tried running it on my work computer and the file appears to be borked, because I downloaded and ran the German version and it worked fine. Anyway, here's a link to a page with the English and German version.
