| What do you think? I'm not very good at picking out socks or trolls, but others seem to be quite good at it. Maybe I don't pay enough attention to poster styles or something. Anyway, some ppl have MULTIPLE socks that I know of, and I don't get why you need to have 9 or so different personas, unless you are really trying to fly under the radar or something... |

people have different parts to their personalities. sometimes they even conflict or contradict eachother.Ychange your opinions from week to week. if u post under only 1 ID then people will always be saying "but i thought you said this before'.
personally i have about 20 different personalities and hold many viewpoints that contradict eachother. because..theres a little bit of truth in everything..

| I get a little worried when my sock starts arguing with me...but otherwise I can't see the harm in it. |

I think some people use their socks in order to settle personal grudges in really nasty, despicable ways while avoiding real-life repercussions. Not naming any names (obviously).

| I have no sock, but I understand the need for one. Many people feel like their main ID is an extension of self, and often in clubs and pubs you meet people who ask what your dave's name is. I often get an "oh, whatever", while my good friend A---, known here as Dan the Chainsaw man, often got very emphatic but mixed responses. Therefore, when one has a controversial opinion or something they really want to say, but do not want to be called up on in real life, in comes the sock. |

No socks for me. I mean, who could really be bothered. And, they start to stink in the long run... |

Yeah, but did he introduce himself as Dan the Chainsawman or did he use a sock name? If I was in Seoul, I'd have no problem talking to Dan at a veggie meeting -- but if he said, "Hi, I'm Rteacher" first and I later found out he was really Dan, that would be a different story. Very different.
(Rteacher and Dan are just two examples ... I'd be very annoyed if I found out any two people with extremely different Internet personae were the same person.) |

no no, always used the public persona, Dan. To use the sock name would defeat the purpose of a sock.
Oh, and Op:
Sock: A fake persona
Troll- An agressive poster who tries to pick fights or derail topics. |

| Another poll that I refuse to answer. Clearly different people use socks for different reasons... |

Hey Mrs. Winkle, I think it's impossible to apply one of those reasons with a broad brush. Any of your reasons could apply to individual cases..

| I'm not sure. My guess is that many people feel there is strength in numbers. If a poster feels he is losing face and is out-numbered by those who disagree with him, he just brings in a sock to back him up. Then there is the appearence that others also hold his point of view. |

I voted 'personality disorder'.
When I read a troll my first response is 'another unemployable at home' (in a job where they have to interact with real people).
As for socks, this is an anonymous board. If you hold a view SO odd that you can't claim it as an anonymous poster, maybe you should take a second look at that opinion, not create another anonymous persona to express it for you. |

Hmm.. let me try expressing it without using a sock.
I believe that there should be a special grade of wine that is corked with used buttplugs.
There, I did it. Wow, that was really liberating! Thanks Mr. Boy! |

What you people don't wear socks? You must have stank feet.
And trolls are awesome!
