My boss is trying to tell me that 5 days vacation is actually 3 days plus 2 days weekend
This is *******, right?

Should be 5 working days, no?

mine's listed in my "work notebook" thingy they keep in the main office as 5 (7). meaning i took five days, but it was seven days away.

i don't fucking get it, either.

my co-teachers regularly refer to weekends as "vacations". i find this odd.

Does your contract say 5 days vacation is 3 days of work day plus 2 days weekend? Does your contract also say "Work days are M-Su?

If not, they're full of ****. I would throw a major fit about that and fight for my vacation days until death (not mine).

And then it says I get 5days summer and 5 days winter vacation

I never work on weekends...so she is full of ****

Right!

You don't take vacation days on your non-working days. You take vacation days on your working days and that's why it's called vacation days.

You should be getting 9 total days off for taking 5 vacation days(M-F) because you are off on 2 weekend between the 5 vacation days (M-F). And if there's holiday during the weekday, you should also be getting extra day(s) for that holiday too.

Last year I worked at an academy and our 5 day vacations (winter and summer) were wrapped around the weekend. So we got Thu, Fri - the weekend - then Mon, Tue, Wed. I moaned and whined about it in summer because I wanted a 9 day break not a 7 day break, but it wasn't going to happen. apparently the parents didn't want their kids away from the books for too long. Anyway, by winter I was sweet with the idea because the part week before the vacation was a short wind-down one and the part week after the vacation was an even shorter getting back into the groove one.
To the OP, your boss is a thieving shyster, and you don't need to take it!

Funny you bring this up because my boss did the same thing. My "summer" vacation was actually during Chuseok week, so instead of 5 days of actual vacation, she used 2 of the Chuseok holiday days and 1 other holiday day on Tuesday. I lost 3 vacation days there, and I just found out last night I'm getting screwed again for winter vacation.
My boss said that the 3 days which were lost would be used on Tuesday during December, January and February, the day after a Monday holiday, thus we have a 4 day weekend. But last night she made winter vacation during Chrismas week, so I lose another holiday day due to her complete BS way of managing a business. She's always thinking of what's best for the hagwon and not for her employees. And to top it off, she notified me last night that our winter vacation is in 2.5 weeks. It's gonna be impossible to find a reasonably priced ticket out of the country for travelling at this point. 개년!

It's obvious that 5 days vacation is 5 working days. You don't work on the weekend! Get in the damn office and tell her that she is going to give you 5 working days vacation or you will hand in your notice. Honestly, this is such a no-brainer I am surprised you posted about it. Do you really need to ask?

actually, if you look a little closer, you'll note that what your boss is DOING is nothing...she is merely SAYING.

So long as it abides by the contract you can't really find fault. Course, if your contract differentiates between "holidays and all national holidays" (like almost all contracts do) then your boss is dreaming and you should point that out.

The same thing happened to me my first year in Korea.
In my contract it said I had ten days holiday. It didn't say that I had to take them when the school was on holiday, just that I have ten days vacation.
So, I assumed that I could take time whenever I wanted as I would back home. Man, I was surprised when the boss told me I had to take them during the school holidays. Luckily, they were so worried about losing me they let me take 5 days and I went to Seoul for a week even though I was the only foreign teacher there.
However, when it came to summer vacation I found that our 5 days included a weekend, even though I didn't work weekends, and there was no way around it.
The moral of the story is to make sure that your contract states that your holidays are 5 or 10 working days and do no include weekends.

This is exactly why you gotta stay vigilent at all time in Korea. In the U.S. vacation is vacation is vacation. Nothing else.

No matter how nice your boss seems, always get ready to cover your ass. They'll screw you with petty *beep* like this. They're deception, ambiguiety and interpretation of words remind of Bill Clinton. "I did not have sexual relationship with that woman, Miss Lewinsky!" "But she gave me nice blow***". Cool

Take copious notes as to what your vacation days were, when you took them, and when national holidays were. I use a day planner to keep this information. Near the end of your contract, pull that out and ask them when you can take the remaining days of vacation time that you're owed, or whether they'd like to pay it out. If they refuse to do either, labour board.

It's really not worth stressing about in the middle of a contract. Wait until it's almost up. What's worse: six months of ill will or six weeks?
