Hey all,
I'm very new to Seoul (arrived last Wednesday night although I'm already quite sure I haven't been home in five years!?) and am wondering if there is much of an Irish community here. I'm from Donegal. I'm determined to get into the Korean way of life as much as I can but really love having some ppl from the same part of the world around me as I feel more relaxed and at ease then.
I'm hoping to join a soccer team (I'm rubbish but fit and enthusiastic!) and as I sing I'd love to link up with some musicians to jam or get a band together maybe.
If any of you know where I should go or what I should be doing then please let me know. I'm the only foreign teacher at my school (in fact I haven't seen ANY visibly foreign ppl around where I live near Dobong Station) so I'm eager to build up a bit of a social network. I'm really loving it here (spent the weekend with my best friend from home and his mates - he just went home today having taught for a year in Mokpo) but obviously don't want to end up feeling lonely and/or going insane!
All info/advice/invites welcome!!

Hi Brian,
I came here without a job (tho' I found one the 2nd day I was here) and I had to wait almost a month before starting work. By that time I'd gone nearly insane with no native english speakers to talk to. It was so great to start work and meet other english speakers and luckily the teachers were really great so I made a lot of friends. It's a pity there are no other foreign teachers at your school. I know there are a lot of Irish teachers in Seoul but I'm not sure where they hang out (I'm English) however I've seen other Irish teachers on daves so i'm sure they'll be weighing in with some help and suggestions before long. I've been racking my brain trying to think of some helpful suggestions to make but the best I can do is advise you to hook up with some other foreigners soon (which is what ou're trying to do) as it will really enhance your experience here but I'm afraid I don't have any practical advice on how to do that. But never fear, better minds than mine will come up with good solutions for you.
Anyway I hope you have a great experience. Feel free to pm me if you have any queries you think I can help you with and I'm sure you'll get lots of help from other posters here too.
Cheers |

There's a fair few of us Irish here in Korea. Maybe not on this message board though!!
All the organized Irish social stuff like gaelic sports and St. Paddy's Day are covered on this website...

You should try the Wolfhound bar in Itaewon, near the station. I haven't been there myself and don't live in Seoul. Apparently, and I only heard this so I'm not 100% sure, but I hear they show GAA. You being a Donegal man will probably be interested to know that. |

I am living in Incheon and at least half the westerners I have met here are Irish. If you want to met Irish people go to Goose Goose or the Rock Bar in Bupyeong, Incheon on a Friday. You have a choice of Northern or Southern. I like both. |

Cheers all. Weird that there don't seem to be many/any Irish on here. I wonder what they're all out doing!? Keep info/leads coming. I'm not a big fan of not having plans for the weekend - at least! |

They're more interested in pints than posts, I reckon. |

Belfast Bhoy here!
I've met quite a few Irish in my 6 years here. They tend to clump around the Gyeonggi-do cities. Anyang, Incheon etc.
It's been a couple of years since I've drank with my homies. I miss that. |

You can't take a piss in this country without hitting an Irishman. Check out the Seoul Gaels if you like Gaelic football. www.seoulgaels.com. The Irish just don't post here as often. They preferred to bitch while getting sloshed in groups (as opposed to the North Americans like myself who are more likely to bitch while getting sloshed alone at home). |
