What is the dress code at the big schools like Pagoda and YBM? They say that all male teachers should wear suits, ties, etc. Does that really happen in practice?

Depends on the director, sometimes you can get away with wearning a nice pair of jeans and a t-shirt (provided neither have holes in them and the t-shirt doesn't have anything offensive on it). I would ask the director before you sign the contract.

Ties are required for men, suits are optional (but wearing a suit scores big points with management).

When I worked there there were maybe 3 or 4 teachers at any time who wore suits.

I didn't mind the dress code so much.. .except in the sticky summers.

I believe it was a Pagoda contract I once read which specified 'no snickers'. Well, Mars Bars it is then.

Our school has no dress code so I can go buck naked and still be able to teach without being bothered. Laughing

I wear a dress shirt with dress slacks and nice shoes. Once a week, I will wear dress jeans. You are what you dress.

Dress professionally, you will be treated with more respect by your Korean colleagues, and students.

Wearing a tie is incredibly useful if you are working at an ECC. You can use it as a tourniquette for bad paper cuts, for autoerotic asphyxiation during especially dull classes, for throttling your bosses, or for hanging yourself.

I am an American, and I dress very nicely every day.

My first year I worked at YMB ECC. The male teachers got written notices for wearing sweaters with out ties. How you would wear a tie with a turtle neck sweater is not the point. Ties are very important when working with children. If the child wants the teacher's attention all they have to do is tug on the tie.

Next thing they'll check is to see if all the teachers are wearing their underwear.

Line up and strip. Rolling Eyes

"If the child wants the teacher's attention all they have to do is tug on the tie."

You tug on my tie again child and you will die a thousand deaths, each more horrible than the last.

Seriously though, would it be acceptable to pull on a Korean teachers tie?

At my school last week, a boy got a (lame) head slap by an older lady teacher for putting his hand on her arm to get her attention. ( It was a thing of beauty. She's about a foot and a half shorter than him, so she she had to order him to bend over so she could slap him.)
