I am due to leave my job in the New Year. However my boss has not found are placement for me yet. Although I am not sure, I suspect that he is offering a pretty paltry 1.8 million won per month salary and he will not find a new teacher until he raises his offer.

Anyway, he seems to take it for granted that I will stay on at least two weeks past my official leaving date to help him out, or until the new teacher arrives. I don't feel in a charitable mood towards the school, they have frequently been disrespectful and cold towards me, so I want to leave as soon as my year is up. The school has always paid me on time etc, but another grievence I have is that I have only had 1 day's holiday out of 10 promised to me in my contract.

My question is, what do you think I should do about this? What are other's experiences about being asked to stay on?

You have some commitment at home that will make it NOT possible for you to stay beyond your contract end date. Sorry.

Leave as soon as your paid your last working months salary. Walk out the door, and don't look back! You've worked to deep into the contract period to stand your ground on the vacation issue.

Get your reference letter now before you piss them off too much. Try to leave on good terms cause you might need them as a reference for future jobs but yeah, tell them you have another job lined up or something.

If your school has been less than good to you, why should you feel obligated to help your director out now? And one day out of ten? That's nuts! I'd try and get those extra days paid or say I'm leaving nine days early if you don't pay me....

Get the reference letter first though... Razz

If you do decide to stay on for additional weeks or months until they find a replacement, demand 2.2 million won/per rate. 2.2 million won is going rate these days.

I doubt your boss will find any replacement any time soon if he's offering 1.8 million. They'll end up holding you up for indefinate time by holding your severance pay. To prevent them from holding your severance pay, tell your boss to pay you're regular pay and severance pay at the end of your original contract ending date.

And if you decide to stay over to help them out until new teacher is hired, make sure they add severance for any weeks or months that you stayed over your contract period.
