About two weeks ago I paid $220 to have my passport expedited. I was told I would have it by 12/14/06.

My recruiter and school are expecting a copy of the first page by 12/15!

Today, I received a letter from the US GOV telling me they need additional ID and information before my PP can be processed.

Among the things they want:

school yearbook photo copy
SS card copy
traffic ticket copy
voter registration card copy
......the list goes on and on

They also require:
a list of every school I've ever attended in the US
a list of every place I've ever lived in the US
a list of every job I've ever held in the US
two personal references
a list of all immediate family members
and this list goes on and on
phone numbers and address for all the above!

The only reason I can imagine they are doing this is because I was born in Germany (father was in US army and stationed there) . I was born in Germany in 1972 and we returned to the states in 1975. Both my parents are US citizens!

I have no criminal record.......

I'm very frustrated because there is nothing I can do until Monday morning.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

If this costs me my job, I'll be pissed. I'm supposed to start in Korea January 2nd. I've already sold my car and started packing. The owner of the hagwon needs my passport photo so I can get my work visa stuff here in the US before I travel.

arrrghhhh

Relax. My passport came late also, and I came into Korea on a tourist visa and then did a visa run to Fukuoka. The worst that will probably happen is you'll get a free trip to Japan.

the extra money for speeding up the process was a waste....

i'm more upset about the endless amount of information I have to provide.
I've been out of university since 1994! How am I supposed to remember my elementary school?

Were your brothers born abroad?

Aren't you glad you come from a country at war and have the US homeland security agency to take such good care of you. Don't the delays make you feel more secure?

Please do tell me you were being facetious. As a Canadian who lived in the US for many years, my unequivocal opinion is that it was a great country until the politicians got involved. The US to me is becoming an isolationist country complete with secret prisons and it's own version of the KGB. Backwards, not forwards.

I hope he was being sarcastic.

It's more like Homeland Insecurity since GWB-idiot stole the presidency.
We are in more trouble now, as a nation, than anytime in the past 100 years.

The Patriot Act is anything but patriotic, if you believe in the US Constitution.

With all the government databases; all they should've done is run my name and SS # and they would KNOW I've lived here all my life, save 3 years.

First thing monday they get the call-then I go to my congressman's local office and have them verify the authenticity of my documents and see if they can speed this up. (they provide passport svc too-should've went to them first)

If I need to, I'll fly to the passport office in DC and show them all my docs. If it'll help I'll overnight my HS yearbook.

lmfao

just because of where I was born I was detained for 3 hours by the INS when I was returning home to Canada from Japan after one year, making me miss my connecting flight.

Asked me all sorts of BS questions and went through my luggage like I had them all stuffed with bombs and I'm not even a Yank.

ever hear of Maher Arar?

So, your passport troubles are nothing compared to what BS other people have to put up with simply because they have the "wrong" name and born in the "wrong" place.

IMO, it's justifiable to question people and search their luggage and shoes based on their country of origin.

There aren't many Bob Smiths, Garry Carters, or Jackson Browns trying to blow up bridges and buildings in the US today.

Illegal or unreasonable detainment is not justifiable; profiling is.

The British were able to keep a large group of muslims from blowing up several large jets by profiling and surveiling groups based on their individual countries of origin and religious background.

lmao- sorry you missed your flight and had someone check through your luggage.

those wacko right wing groups are under surveillance too, hopefully.

but touche'

hey- i don't support the US current administration; the war on iraq is unjustifiable no matter how you look at it......etc etc etc

actually, in the name of safety, i think everyone getting on a plane anywhere should be scrutinized....

I think, and this is just me, that there should be no carry on luggage allowed on planes. Before 9/11 it was known that secure cocpit doors were needed but noone would push the airlines to do cause it cost too much money.

The next attack on airliners will be through carryon luggage and thousands will die and then we will ban carryon luggage only after thousands die and the airlines lose another 10 billion.

Ban carryon luggage. Then there's no need to worry about screening people.
