Hello,

Does or has anyone worked for Pagoda or YBM language schools?

My Korean girlfriend says that they are famous but are they good to work for?

Thanks

I hear they're great if you can handle the split shifts.

Pagoda is awful. You get a monthly rating out of 100. If it falls below 90 for consecutive months you get fired. You can lose points for things like not wearing your name badge.

YBM ELS seem much better, and at least a couple of branches - ELS Chongno, and some of the schools around kangnam - have most of their teachers on blockshifts. When I worked at ELS Chongno I only had to do split-shifts for two months before getting blocks.

Oh yeah! I remember hearing that. I must have blocked it out of my head because it was really stupid.

ELS Somyon is not all that bad (in Busan mind you) except for the split shift which is pretty tough...but that happens a lot in the adult schools.

YBM ECC branch (kids) has smaller or no splits (depends if you teach kindergarten) and the company owned schools tend to be well run. They pay less than other hakwons but respect the conract and offer a stable curriculum you can work with and expand on.

I would say YBM is a decent first job for an inexperienced teacher or for a teacher who wants to play it safe for his or her first job.

Finally, all the comments above are invalidated when you talk about a non-company YBM school (i.e. a franchise school run by an indenpendant owner). In such a case...it becomes a roll of the dice.

Pagoda...I heard mixed reports but will not go and make unbased comments here.

They don't provide any accommodation which means forking out around 400/500,000won of your 2.0million won a month salary on housing. Scratch that!
