I'm heading out of here at the end of Jan. In the past, I've been to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
My fisrt port of call will be bkk and, seeing as I like the place so much last time, I will probably get the night train to Chiang Mai. Once there, it would be silly not to carry on north and into Laos. Once in Laos, it would make snese to go to Cambodia. Laos and Cambodia are so cheap and relaxed that I just love them to bits. I'm thinking of going back to VN to teach so that can wait.
Anyway, where else would you recommend. I'm considering India, Nepal, Burma and China. I have upto six months and a budget of US$10,000.
Thanks in advance.

Tons. Use your noggin and scrape the fat on the odd occasion. Breakfast should be inexpensive, so too with lunch. But always have at least one good, filling meal a day- Keeps your strength up.
Remember too, you only need a roof over your head. So nothing fancy.
Sometimes easy on the old grog and you'll be right.
Have fun. |

He's going to SE Asia, not europe. You could probably last a year with that much if you played your cards right. |

In touristy spots in Thailand, if one knows how to cut costs (eat street food and stay in concrete cells) one can easily live on $50 a day. In Cambodia and Laos, $50 a day is a fortune!!! I don't know about the others, hence the question.
If you think $10,000 is inadequate for six months, you've obviously never been backpacking.

Exactly...Street food and concrete cells...I couldn't do that...or ramyon all the time either. And no, I've never been backpacking and I don't EVER plan to do so. Now, if I had $50,000 or more and could do it first class, then yes. But then it couldn't be called backpacking, I guess. |

10000 a day, jeebus, that works out to around $55 a day. Wasn't that long ago (in another incarnation) I was bumming around India, Nepal and Thailand on $5-10 per diem, room, food and dope included. Figure prices have roughly doubled since so you could look at 30ish in Thai and still be comfortable on 20ish in India and Nepal, so long as you don't want to stay at the Ritz. Cheap hotels abound and you can still get somewhere clean at the bottom end. Street food is generally good, cheap and plentiful. Once a month or so, splash out and enjoy a decent room, a night on the suds and a decent meal, helps you from slipping into stinky hippiedom. |

Princess. Thanks for your informative reply. Next time you consider replying to a thread, read the title and ask yourself "can I add anything constrcutive to this thread?"
In this case, the answer clearly would've been "NO".
Now, run along back to your chateau where mommy is preparing champaign and caviar. |

Strongly recommend India. Do the Golden Triangle if nothing else. |
