I was browsing the job ads, and came across this:

Full-time Professor: Daegu Haany University (Daegu City)
Posted By: Daegu Haany University <[email protected]>
Date: Friday, 8 December 2006, at 11:02 a.m.
Daegu Haany university(www.dhu.ac.kr) is currently seeking a full-time
professor who will teach English conversation courses in the
Department of Liberal Art.
1. One year contract, starting from March 1, 2007 (Renewable)
2. Qualifications :
Native speaker of English with a university degree.
Master's degree will be highly considered
Teaching experience in Korea is preferred, yet not required.
3. Conditions:
1) 12 hours per week (from Monday to Friday)
2) Between 1.6 and 1.7 million won per month depending on qualifications
3) 400,000 won per month for rent and utilities
4) Paid vacations(you have practically no teaching obligation during summer
or winter vacation)
5) one million won for a round-trip airfare (per year)
6) Severance Pay upon the successful completion of the contract.
|
Now, while it mentions an allowance for rent and utilities (the second one is nice) 400000 is not much, and most jobs have housing included and have a higher salary.
Maybe I'm missing something here. |

It all depends on how much paid vacation there is. A lot of Uni jobs are similar.
BTW: What the hell is this doing in this forum? |

Good question. Had two forums open at once and clicked on new topic in the wrong one. |

Why do you have to ask? Look at all the other uni jobs and you'll be able to work out if it's low or not. |

meaning "we obviously would hire an experienced MA, but at this pay and benefit rate we'll take pretty well anything with a pulse, as we don't really value the English classes or anything they do".
I was offered similar at Korea Maritime in Busan, and of course turned it down. Later I found out most instructors there were from European or African countries as non-native speakers. Some places don't care.
My understanding is that this yearly flight home is mandatory, and this cute trick of a 'million won' to cover it seems shady in itself. Who can fly home to North America return on that?

Also, the "practically no teaching obligation during summer
or winter vacation" could still mean one class a day throughout the entire vacation, which means no actually vacation time! |

wrong - it's still low, really incredibly low. In fact it's the bottom of the septic tank low. |

Looks like they're trading the "professor" title for a few hundred thousand won.
Crap. |

Dude, I know it's low, I was more commenting on it than asking about it. I just saw it and thought "man that's low".
And anyway... People aren't allowed to post questions anymore? |
